Maclay Soccer Only Leon County Team Left in State Tournament

There were nine Leon County soccer teams that made the state tournament in their respective classification. Those teams included Community Christian (CCS) (boys), St. John Paul II (JPII) (girls), Maclay (boys and girls), Florida High (boys and girls), Rickards (boys) and Chiles (boys and girls). The Maclay boys soccer team is the only team left in state competition among the 9 teams listed.

1A

On Feb. 11, the CCS boys soccer team (9-6-1) upset Rocky Bayou Christian (10-9) in the first round of the FHSAA 1A state tournament beating the knights with a final score of 3-2. With the win, they advanced to the regional semi-final where they lost to Academy at the Lakes (12-3-2) on Feb. 14 with a final score of 2-0.

JPII’s girls soccer team came into the state tournament with a record of 9-8 and seeded 8th in the FHSAA 1A state tournament. They played the 1st seeded St. Johns Country Day (17-3-1) on Feb. 11 and lost with a final score of 8-0.

2A

The Maclay boys soccer team (18-1-2) has played two games in the FHSAA 2A state tournament so far and have won both in a convincing manner, beating Branford (10-8-1) 9-0 in the first round and beating Trinity Catholic (10-8-3) 8-0 in the second. They are scheduled to play the regional semi-final on Feb. 19 against the Episcopal School of Jacksonville Eagles (15-2-4).

The Maclay girls soccer team (12-4-2) started the state tournament off by beating Williston (12-5) 8-0 in the first round. The Marauders then faced off against P. K. Yonge (16-2-1) on Feb. 18 losing with a final score of 5-1.

On Feb. 11, the Florida High boys soccer team (13-4-3) beat North Bay Haven (5-11-1) in the first round of the FHSAA 3A state tournament 3-0. With the win, the Seminoles progressed to the regional semi-finals where they lost 2-1 to South Walton (16-3-5) on Feb. 14.

The Florida High girls soccer team lost to South Walton (8-9) in the first round of the FHSAA 3A state tournament on Feb. 11. With the loss, the Seminoles finished the season with a record of 11-5-3.

4A

On Feb 4. the Rickards boys soccer team (13-3) faced off against Bishop Kenny (10-6-2) in the first round of the FHSAA 4A state tournament beating them 2-1. The Raiders then went on to upset the top seeded West Florida (14-5-3) 3-2 in the regional semi-finals. Rickards’ season came to an end in the regional finals as the Raiders lost to Fort Walton Beach (14-6-1) 2-0.

The Chiles boys soccer team (9-4-5) played against Fleming Island (15-2-6) in the first round of the FHSAA 5A state tournament on Feb. 4. The Timberwolves’ season came to an end as they lost to Fleming Island 1-0.

The Chiles Girls soccer team (16-3) made a strong state run in the FHSAA 5A state tournament beating Orange Park (12-4-1) 3-0 in the first round and Beachside (10-7-2) 1-0 in the regional semi-final. The Timberwolves’ season ended on Feb. 12 as they came up short in the regional final losing to Ponte Vedra (15-3-2) 1-0.
