TPD Recognizes Officer Ponce de Leon

Today, the Tallahassee Police Department is recognizing the anniversary of the tragic death of Officer Ernest Kearns Ponce de Leon.

On social media, TPD states, “Today, we pause to honor the life and sacrifice of Officer Ernest Kearns Ponce de Leon, who gave his life in the line of duty on July 8, 1988.”

While assisting a fellow officer on a suspicious vehicle call, Officer Ponce de Leon was tragically shot and killed. The suspects, who had recently escaped from the Maryland Department of Corrections, ambushed the officers during what appeared to be a routine check. All suspects were apprehended.

The social media post state, “Officer Ponce de Leon served with courage and dedication, protecting our community until his final moments. His sacrifice remains a solemn reminder of the risks law enforcement officers take each day. We remain forever grateful for his service and continue to honor his memory.”

  1. I remember he worked at the Publix when there was one on Apalachee Parkway. A nice dude. Think they should put a monument where he was ambushed.
