Backers of a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow recreational use of marijuana have submitted more than 600,000 petition signatures as they try to put the measure on the 2026 ballot.
The state Division of Elections website Tuesday showed 613,206 valid signatures for the proposal, sponsored by the Smart & Safe Florida political committee. The proposal is similar to a 2024 ballot proposal that fell short of the required 60 percent voter support for passage.
Smart & Safe Florida would need to submit at least 880,062 valid signatures statewide and meet signature requirements in congressional districts to get on the 2026 ballot. It has far surpassed a 220,016-signature threshold that allows reviews of the measure by the Florida Supreme Court and a panel known as the Financial Impact Estimating Conference.
Meanwhile, Smart & Safe Florida and political committees supporting other proposed constitutional amendments are challenging in federal court a new state law that placed additional restrictions on the ballot-initiative process. U.S. District Judge Mark Walker held a hearing last week on the committees’ requests for a preliminary injunction to block parts of the law, but he had not ruled as of Tuesday.
Idiocy. We voted this down already. The state will go into the sh#tter like Colorado and California have. Just vote NO.
@ John = When Colorado Legalized it, you wont believe how many people thought that they couldn’t be fired after testing Positive for Pot even though they smoked it the night before.
Every person signing this petition should be required to spend a week in the states that have already legalized marijuana. If they like the filth in those states, and enjoy breathing the putrid air, they can Move! Leave Florida alone!
David…. People are being arrested today for Driving stoned. People are being fired today for failing drug tests at work, and people show up at the hospital today for doing something stupid(whether stoned or not)…… The only question then is why you are waiting???
YEAH! Where is it! I’ll sign it! Legalize it!
If this passes, after the First Year, I can’t wait to see the Numbers of:
Those Arrested for Driving While Stoned.
Those Fired for Failing Drug Test at work.
Those taken to Hospital for doing something Stupid while Stoned.
