Backed by a three-year $1.55 million federal grant, the University of West Florida Board of Trustees approved the creation of an academy focused on “civic republicanism.”
In a press release Friday, the university described the newly created Academy of American Civic Republicanism as “an independent academic center dedicated to exploring civic republicanism — a tradition with deep historical roots and which emphasizes active citizenship, civic virtue and the common good.”
The center will be an expansion of a year-round program at the Pensacola-based university’s Summer Institute for Civics Educators.
Clifford Humphrey, chief of staff and vice president of strategic initiatives for UWF, described the academy “as a bulwark against collective civic amnesia, training teachers and students in the principles of self-government that both proceed from and sustain the liberty that has defined the United States of America for a quarter of a millennium.”
The academy expands upon Gov. Ron DeSantis’ moves to overhaul higher education in Florida, with an emphasis on classical education. The UWF center follows the refocusing of New College of Florida in Sarasota and the launch of the Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education at the University of Florida. Florida Supreme Court Justice Charles Canady announced last month that he will step down from the bench in January to take over as director of the Hamilton School.

Civics 101: “training teachers and students in the principles of self-government that both proceed from and sustain the liberty that has defined the United States of America for a quarter of a millennium.” is not the purpose or power of the federal govt or my 1.5bn in federal taxes.
And, we cant afford it. We are 38 trillion in debt.
