Construction in Tallahassee’s Market District is moving into a new phase as city officials revise the sequencing of major roadway work to accelerate completion of Maclay Boulevard.
The updates were outlined in a February 18th City Commission agenda item detailing progress on the long-planned Market District Action Plan, a community-driven revitalization strategy adopted in 2011. The plan, developed with residents and business owners, aims to transform the district over 20 years through improved connectivity, expanded public spaces, enhanced stormwater infrastructure and traffic safety upgrades.
Construction on the Market District Park, East Stormwater Facility and roadway improvements began in January 2025. The project includes full reconstruction of Maclay Boulevard and Maclay Commerce Drive, underground utility upgrades, pedestrian enhancements, landscaped medians and two new roundabouts designed to improve traffic flow and safety.
City and Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency officials said that, effective Feb. 16, 2026, a revised construction sequencing plan will fast-track work on Maclay Boulevard and the central roundabout at Maclay Commerce Drive. The change is expected to reopen Maclay Boulevard by late summer 2026 — earlier than originally scheduled — ahead of the district’s busiest shopping and dining season.
Despite the sequencing adjustment, officials say the overall project remains on schedule for completion by the end of 2026.
City staff emphasized that ongoing coordination with area businesses and residents will continue throughout construction to minimize disruptions and address concerns as they arise.
