Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody commended the Tallahassee City Commission recently for voting to increase TPD’s budget. Last year, the City Commission voted to increase property taxes 8.5% to pay fund increased law enforcement funding. The budget passed with a 3-2 vote (with City Commissioners Jeremy Matlow and Jack Porter voting in dissent). Matlow criticized Moody by calling her a “big government Republican” for weighing into local issues.
A murder suspect who led local law enforcement on a lengthy manhunt in Gadsden County Wednesday has now been apprehended. Reginald Smith, 53, was apprehended overnight and is in custody, according to the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office. He was wanted in connection to a deadly stabbing and two fires. The sheriff’s office believed the two fires served as a distraction.

No. 10 Florida State (32-8, 11-7) visits No. 6 Duke (29-12, 13-8) for its second-consecutive ranked ACC series on the road. The three-game series kicks off Friday at 6:00 p.m. as the Seminoles look to build off the momentum of Tuesday’s win over North Florida.
The No. 16 Florida State softball team (37-10, 15-3) returns to JoAnne Graf Field this weekend for a big series with North Carolina (30-16, 10-11) on senior weekend. The teams will play at 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and noon on Sunday.
Florida State defensive end Jared Verse became the program’s 47th first-round NFL Draft selection Thursday evening when the Los Angeles Rams picked him 19th overall.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody filed a lawsuit against the Atlantic Coast Conference for allegedly withholding ESPN-related agreements from review. The suit from AG Moody comes as the conference and Florida State University remain embroiled in a dispute over how much it might cost the Seminoles if the team were to leave the conference. Moody’s lawsuit is targeting the media contracts between the conference and television partner ESPN.
The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL) is denouncing President Joe Biden’s recent visit to Florida. CAIR objects to Biden’s visit on the grounds of “ongoing atrocities and genocide in Gaza,” and contends the White House’s “failure to address these grave violations of human rights is deeply concerning and stains the moral fabric of our nation.”

Heading into Thursday’s oral arguments, many legal pundits had predicted the justices would swat away Trump’s claim of immunity from federal criminal charges for trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election. But the court’s conservative majority seemed to find considerable heft in the former president’s warning that allowing the case against him to proceed would produce tit-for-tat prosecutions anytime the presidency changes parties.
A New York appeals court panel voted 4-3 to overturn the 2020 rape conviction of Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein yesterday, ordering a new trial. The 72-year-old Weinstein will be moved to a prison in California where he was separately convicted of sex crimes in 2022 and sentenced to 16 years.
