FLORIDA NEWS

Hurricane Helene made landfall late Thursday night in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 4 storm, generating sustained winds of 140 mph and unleashing a catastrophic storm surge that threatened the Gulf Coast.

Nearly 1.2 million Florida power customers were without electricity as of 7 a.m. on Friday morning, after Hurricane Helene made landfall in the state.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted by a federal grand jury, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News. In a speech addressed to New Yorkers on Wednesday, Adams vowed to fight what he called the “entirely false” indictment with “every ounce of my strength and my spirit.”

A gunman is in custody after carrying out a Metro bus hijacking in Los Angeles, California, killing one person. Officers have not yet named the suspect or identified a motive.
