By the Numbers: Helene Insurance Claims

Nearly 40,000 insurance claims had been filed in Florida as of Sunday from Hurricane Helene, which made landfall Thursday night in Taylor County and caused widespread damage in the state. The number of claims and estimated insured losses will increase in the coming days and weeks. Here are initial numbers as of Sunday:

— $434,696,041: Estimated insured losses.

— 39,898: Total number of claims.

— 20,759: Claims for damage to residential property.

— 817: Claims under private flood insurance policies.***

— 294: Claims for damage to commercial property.

— 8: Claims under business-interruption policies.

— 18,020: Claims under what the state classifies as “other” lines of business, including auto policies.

— 592: Number of claims closed with payments to policyholders.

— 857: Number of claims closed without payments to policyholders.

— 38,449: Number of open claims.

*** Most flood policies are through the federal National Florida Insurance Program, not private policies.
