FAMU Athletic Director Faces Charges

Florida A&M University athletic director Angela Suggs was arrested on allegations that she misused a credit card from her previous employer to make wire transfers, cash withdrawals and purchases at casinos, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced Monday.

Suggs, who became the university’s athletic director and a vice president in October, is accused of misusing the credit card while serving as president and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation, a non-profit organization that operates under the state Department of Commerce.

Suggs was charged with a felony count of grand theft, a felony count of scheme to defraud and four misdemeanor counts of false claims on travel vouchers, the FDLE announcement said. An investigation began after the FDLE received a referral from the Department of Commerce’s inspector general related to an audit of Suggs’ credit-card purchases and travel reimbursements.

Regardless of if it is FAMU, FSU, State of FL. or if it your local church or organization, good folks fall to temptation when given great access to financial resources.
Checks and balances with finances will keep folks honest...no matter how much you trust them; the temptation is too great. You must have oversite.

"It’s time that FSU absorbed FAMU and the silliness ended."

I believe the new controversial FAMU president was brought in to do exactly that.

FAMU has a long history of questionable financial responsibility.

When the TLCCC was built, the city, FSU, and FAMU all split the cost with FAMU and FSU putting up about $6.5M each. When the facility opened and the universities started using it FAMU acted shocked that there were per event costs (like liability insurance) that they hadn't budgeted so they decided to not use it for basketball and just walked away from that $6.5M.

Fast forward to the early 2000s. Most of the administrative records and processing for the public Florida universities was done on the IBM systems at NWRDC in Innovation Park and NERDC in Gainesville. The decision was made to shut down mainframes and move the processing to Peoplesoft systems. FSU and FAMU spent a lot of money to build nearly identical systems at NWRDC. FAMU was shocked to then learn that they had to have their own staff to make the university specific modifications necessary for FAMU.

Now this. The two universities are separated by some student housing along Gaines Street. It's time that FSU absorbed FAMU and the silliness ended.

Stop Handing out Credit Cards like candy. Assign each Department a few Credit Cards and make the Employees sign them out for Authorized Trips and the Card has a ZERO BALANCE at that time. When they return from the Trip they must turn the Card in along with ALL Receipts. Every Card Purchase must have a Receipt, any Purchase made that is NOT Authorized, that user must write a Check on the spot.

No wonder they are all raisin Cane over the choice for president. If I had a straight up thief for an athletic director I would try to distract the public by focusing on the "bad conservative" choice for president too.

No one at FAMU is fooling anyone, they are a bad joke everyone pays lip service to avoid being called a racist.
