Enrollment at Five Leon County Elementary Schools Have Declined by 20% Since 2019

On April 22, 2024, Leon County School (LCS) Board Member Alva Smith stated one of her budget priorities is to look at the financial impact of downsizing the school district due to declining enrollment.

Smith explained it was a vital conversation about downsizing stating, “We are not being fiscally responsible and good stewards of tax payers’ dollars if we do not discuss downsizing in this district.” She continued, “If we do not discuss closing a school, we are not being good stewards.”

The table below provides the unweighted student full-time equivalent, or FTE, for 22 Leon County elementary schools for 20119/20, 2022/23, & 2023/24. The table also provides the school capacity.

The schools are sorted by the largest to smallest decline in FTE’s over the 2019/20 – 2023/24 period.

The data shows:

-FTE’s at five schools have declined 20% or more from 2020 to 2024.
-Seven schools had FTE declines from 2023 to 2024.
-Eight schools which have a current capacity of less than 75%.

There are four schools – Springwood, Hartsfield, Astoria Park, and Sealey – which have experienced a 20% or more FTE decline over the last five years, a FTE decline from 2023 to 2024, and are currently below 75% capacity.

Two schools – Bond, Sabal Palm – have experienced a five-year FTE decline of over 10%, but have rebounded with positive growth from 2023 to 2024.

Four schools – Gilchrist, Riley, Buck Lake, Kate Sullivan – are currently over 90% capacity.

  1. But at least Skip Foster got some of that gravy train logo grift. Lol at alva switching parties again, could see that! the real taxpayers cost will be all the signs LCS re-prints x300 for every school

  2. @ DeepStatePropagandist… you need to lay off the weed, sweetie. Paying a McDonalds fry cook more does not produce a “better product”. And ignoring the correlation between declining enrollment in the Public Indoctrination System and the exponential increase in enrollment in the Private Education arena is naive at best.

If you hate Florida and despise parents so much, why don’t you just move. I’m sure you’d thrive as one of Adolf Biden’s little Brown Shirt Nazis at the Pro-Hamas parties he and his Marxist pals are organizing all around the country.

Get with the program, toots… Americans want their country and education system back, and want to protect our children and future from you maniacal leftists and your destructive and evil agenda.

  3. Meanwhile, Florida ranks 49 out of 50 in teacher pay now under the constant threat of being sued by a faux moral parent brigade while they drive Ubers at night to make ends meet.

In the reality based world where people think about things instead of spouting off about indoctrination, Florida’s birth rate has fallen consistently since 2012.

“Florida’s birth rate fell 22.5% between 2007 and 2022, from 13.02 births per 1,000 people to 10.09, Alex Fitzpatrick and Kavya Beheraj report based on new CDC data.”

I’d post a link, but then it gets hung up. So yeah, Floridians are having fewer children, and there are fewer children in elementary school. Probably some kind of communist plot. I bet if we have a trial about Hunter Biden’s junk things will straighten out though.

  4. Symbols of Communism often contain a single large star.

    Examples:
    The Cuban flag.
    The Vietnamese flag.
    The Russian flag.

    And now:
    The LCS logo.

  5. The Leon County Public Indoctrination System is failing for a very simple reason… a lack of strong and true leadership from the top down. They completely surrendered the system to political ideologs who have their own destructive agenda.

They went from teaching Reading to teaching Race Hate
They went from teaching Writing to teaching the Art of Whining
They went from teaching Arithmetic to the Tactics of Anarchy

They completely transitioned their curriculum from one of Life Skills and Academics, to one of Victimhood and Activism. They produce young adults who graduate High School and can’t get a job because they can’t even read or write at a Middle School level… and then they are them stupefied when those young adults turn to drugs and crime to survive.

Thank God, our Great Governor, and our Legislature for School Choice and Vouchers that give parents who care about the future of their child and children a chance to help them succeed in life.

  6. No Richard. There is no truth to your statement. Just because you spout it out there doesn’t make it truth. Go back to crying about the world and leave the grown ups alone.

  7. Sad to see so many low IQers calling for the closing of schools and the dumbing down of America. Just because you were failures in life and school doesn’t mean we should cause our citizens to be dumb like you.

  8. What do they expect when they turn Leon County schools into lefty indoctrination camps. Then they change the logo to a lefty “inclusive” rainbow. Normal folks aren’t putting up with that crap and are pulling their kids out of these below grade schools.

  9. Breaking: Jefferson County School Board decides NOT to renew contract of principal Jackie Pons. (Pons also running for superintendent over there.)

  10. Breaking: Jefferson County Skrewel Board decides NOT to renew contract of principal Jackie Pons. Pons also running for superintendent over there.

  11. Thankfully, more and more parents are realizing that if they want their child/children to succeed in life, then they must get them the hell out of the ever-failing Public Indoctrination System.

Not only should they talk about closing public schools, but they should also talk about reducing the school tax levy commensurate with the reduction.

Shut them all down and protect our children.

  12. Last year I hired two kids, one graduated from Lincoln and the other from Leon. Neither one of them could speak or write in complete sentences, when problems occurred they stopped whatever they were doing and waited for someone to ask what was going on and fix their problem for them.

Leon County Schools are failing, everyone knows it, that’s why everyone with the means to do so is getting their kids out of Rocky’s Skrewel of Stupid.

  13. I see 8 Schools on that list at less than 75% capacity? You don’t see the Silver Lining in that? Years ago, Teachers complained that they had too many Kids in their Class and couldn’t spend any real one on one time with a Student that needed it. So we VOTED to shrink the Class Size in Elementary Schools so Teachers can have more One on One time with the Kids. Use this to your advantage.
