LOCAL NEWS

FDOE enrollment data shows that full-time enrollment at five different elementary schools in the LCS system has decreased by 20 percent over the last five years. Leon County School Board Member Alva Smith recently stated one of her budget priorities is to look at the financial impact of downsizing the school district due to declining enrollment.

The latest information from the Tallahassee International Airport shows that March 2024 passenger traffic increased 11.5% when compared to traffic one year ago. The number of passengers were up 8,472 from the 73,798 reported during March 2023 to 782,270 in March 2024.

A woman who was fatally hit by a vehicle Monday evening in Tallahassee has been identified as a Florida State University sophomore. An 18-year-old has also been arrested in connection to the fatal incident.

The City of Tallahassee is honoring the late Althea Gibson by renaming part of Wahnish Way, to Althea Gibson Way on the campus of Florida A&M University. On Tuesday, Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey took part in Tuesday’s unveiling ceremony at the Al Lawson Center.

The states of Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina have jointly filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama against the Biden administration’s recent modifications to Title IX regulations. The amendments, slated to take effect in August, aim to broaden anti-discrimination protections to encompass gender identity and sexual orientation.

In the aftermath of the devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma, Gov. Ron DeSantis instructed the Florida Division of Emergency Management to dispatch an incident management team to Sulphur, OK and a specialized team to Oklahoma City. The purpose of the deployment is to provide crucial assistance for the ongoing response and recovery operations.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the state would be having its second Freedom Sales Tax Holiday initiative, spanning the month of July. The governor made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday. The initiative exempts sales tax for supplies for outdoor activities such as camping, fishing, boating, and swimming. It stretches from July 1 to July 31.

Dozens of New York City police officers entered Columbia University’s campus last night after student protesters overtook an administrative building earlier in the day. The students, who were arrested and led out of the building by police, are expected to face charges, including trespassing and criminal mischief. The development marks an escalation in campus tensions over the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Eight regional daily newspapers sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement yesterday, the latest in an industrywide reckoning with the rise of content-dependent artificial intelligence. The outlets, including the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune, are owned by hedge fund Alden Global Capital, the nation’s second-largest newspaper operator.

  1. The Tallahassee Police Department announced Tuesday the arrest of 18-year-old Willis Trueblood Jr. for leaving the scene of the fatal hit-and-run.

    Witnesses told investigators that Sims was using the crosswalk when she was hit by Trueblood Jr., according to TPD.

    TPD said Trueblood Jr. and the vehicle involved were both located less than two hours after the incident. Recent court records indicated officers located the damaged vehicle at the intersection of Liberty and Holton Streets.

    Court records alleged the vehicle “had damage to its hood and windshield consistent with the crash, as well as what appeared to be blood and hair in the windshield.”

    Trueblood Jr. entered a written plea of not guilty in connection to the incident, court records revealed.
