Leon County School Construction Projects on Schedule

The School Board of Leon County had their plate full with major construction projects over the last two years. Tallahassee Reports gathered information on five of the projects which were scheduled to be completed before the 2016/17 school year began.

The information, presented below, indicates the projects were all on schedule – with minor exceptions – to be completed when students begin arriving in August. The total budgeted costs for the projects was reported to be approximately $18.5 million.

The projects included the construction of new classrooms, cafeteria expansions, new roofs, new administration offices and renovations of existing facilities.

Buck Lake Elementary School

The board approved this project March 10, 2015 and the construction is scheduled to be completed on time in August 2016. The project included a new 10 classroom wing that will be used for students who were being taught in 12 portables. Also, the cafeteria is being expanded to provide more room which will help make lunch periods more efficient. The kitchen will also get improved appliances. The project is budgeted to cost approximately $4.5 million.

DeSoto Trail Elementary School

This project was approved on May 26, 2015 and the classroom part of the construction is scheduled to be completed on time in August 2016. TR was told the work on the cafeteria would take a few extra days to complete. The project includes eight classrooms, which will replace some portables, and a music and art room. The DeSoto Trail cafeteria will also be expanded and will get new windows and appliances. The project is budgeted to cost approximately $6.5 million.

Deerlake Middle School

This project was approved on July 28, 2015 and will be completed on schedule in September, 2016. The project includes new construction that will expand Deerlake’s administration offices. The new space will facilitate the advisory staff, the school’s guidance department and new health clinic. The construction will create a new office area for the dean of students, assistant principal and school resource officer. The project is budgeted to cost approximately $2.3 million.

Gilchrist Elementary School

This project was approved on July 21, 2015 and the classroom part of the construction was completed on time and the renovation portion of the work is scheduled to be completed in August 2016. The project includes a new wing which will contain eight classrooms, two resource rooms and one lab. Last summer an eight classroom wing was completed. The project is budgeted to cost approximately $3.8 million.

Oak Ridge Elementary School

This project was approved April 26, 2016 and is schedule to to be completed on time during the first week of August, 2016. Construction staff told TR that the roof at this elementary school has been patched a number of times and  it was time for new roof. The project is budgeted to cost approximately $1.75 million.
