Tallahassee Seeks $3.6 Mill from State for Local Projects

The City of Tallahassee is seeking approximately $3.6 million from state government coffers for projects spanning workforce development, public safety training facilities, and infrastructure projects. The details on each request, including legislative sponsors, amount requested, and local match are as follows:

New Job Workforce Development Program – The City of Tallahassee is leading an effort, driven through partnerships with Leon County and local School Board, to leverage public assets (staff, equipment, and work sites) for training. The program will impact the economic development of the region by providing low-barrier opportunities to individuals with a desire to work in the construction field and fuel local jobs.

The amount requested is $688,313 and the local match is 47.5%. The sponsors are Senator Montford and Representative Alexander

TEMPO Workforce Training Youth – TEMPO is a public safety and economic development outreach initiative to connect Disconnected Youth with educational and workforce opportunities. Tallahassee is estimated to have approximately 7,000 Disconnected Youth who are between the ages of 16-24, that are not in school or employed, and are most susceptible to crime as a victim, suspect or perpetrator. The target service population for FY19 is 1,000.

The amount requested is $620,000 and the local match is 25.3%. The sponsors are Senator Montford and Representative Alexander.

Resiliency project 30-inch Sewer Pipe – This project will build a discharge pipeline for a major sewer pump station that pumps 30% of the City’s total wastewater. The 30-inch pipeline will parallel the existing 30-inch force main that discharges wastewater from Pump Station 12 to Pump Station 149.

The amount requested is $787,500 and the local match is 85%. The sponsors are Senator Montford and Representative Ausley.

TPD Training Facility – The City of Tallahassee has recently conducted an assessment and has been directed to develop a public safety campus serving many community policing functions. This year, the architect will be designing the training facility portion of the new campus to include classrooms, firing range, defensive tactical room, and physical training room. In addition, officers are developing a wellness program for the 410 members of TPD.

The amount requested is $1,495,343 and the local match is 75.9%. The sponsors are Senator Montford and Representative Ausley.

  1. “Disconnected Youth” wow is that a Social Justice Warrior euphemism for “high school dropout with zero skills or motivation” or what. Wikipedia says it’s: “…young people “Not in Education, Employment, or Training” …aged 16 to 24″ (since when is “youth” someone 24 years old?).

and its mission “…to connect Disconnected Youth with educational and workforce opportunities…” Uh, isn’t this what Tallahassee Workforce Development already does? https://www.tcc.fl.edu/workforce-development/about-wd/

If a child of 16 to 24 is still aimlessly dragging the streets possibly some kind of mental or emotional counseling is called for instead of this. Plus, there needs to be a results-based review annually to prove that next year’s funding is justified.

    1. I don’t think we can legally get rid of any of the commission positions. But did Gillum ever give back his illegally obtained deferred comp like he said several years ago he would when he left office?
