Gillum Transfers $500K in Gubernatorial Campaign Funds to Non-Profit

According to campaign filings with the Florida Department of State, last month Andrew Gillum transferred $500,000 from his political committee, Forward Florida, to a non-profit he runs called Forward Florida Action.

The non-profit was created by Gillum earlier this year with the mission to register and re-engage 1 million Democratic voters by the 2020 election.

The transfer means what Gillum does with money, which was originally donated for his gubernatorial campaign, will be hidden from public view. A political committee is required to itemize expenditures each month, however Gillum’s nonprofit does not have to disclose its spending or donations.

The Tampa Bay Times first reported the transfer.

Why transfer the money? Gillum spokesman Joshua Karp told the Tampa Bay Times that the nonprofit “is allowed to directly spend money on voter registration efforts” in ways his political committee could not.

Karp did not explain the specific limitations of the political committee.

Also, the Tampa Bay Times reported that Gillum was not taking a salary from the non-profit.

Earlier this year TR reported on how John Morgan, a major donor to Gillum’s gubernatorial campaign, was furious after he it was revealed Gillum failed to spend approximately $3 million in campaign funds during the race.

  1. Give the guy a break! This is totally legal and a great move. At least he’s not letting it sit just to draw interest. He’s putting it to work for the Democrats. Most of these negative posts are simply partisan-based jabs.

    1. Rick, I think your remarks might be better directed at John Morgan, he’s exactly a Conservative “partisan”. Mr. Morgan seems to have a real problem with your “totally legal and a great move” reasoning.
I doubt Mr. Morgan will “give the guy a break” – he’s not known for that.

  2. I need to study this And find out the reason for all of his actions.
I want to trust him and yet i am perplexed about about the depth of the situation.
I am going to find another source for in-depth reporting.

  3. Thank you to the people of Florida for electing DeSantis and not another crooked democrat. Look what happened to Tallahassee, California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Connecticut all run by Democrats. Citizens of these states fleeing to states run by republicans. Don’t dare criticize democrats they can only call people who disagree racist as they cannot tell the truth or back up there arguments. As an older woman of color these racist Democrats don’t know what racism is period and I walked away from the Democratic Party they made me walk away!
    I

    1. You’re exactly right, Shirlita. Democrats have been fleeing the states (and cities) ruined by their own voting patterns. Those states and cities will become even worse places as the working taxpayers leave and the elected officials no longer have any tax income to give away to the poor and unemployed, or to pay the government and union employees’ large pensions. Socialism always crumbles after the taxpayers leave.
The problem now is the Democrats moving to our healthy, thriving states and cites and continue to vote for the same failed politicians and liberal giveaways that destroyed where they came from. They didn’t learn anything.

  4. Does this really surprise anyone? Why do you think so many Democrats are running for president when 95% know they have no chance of getting the nomination. They’ll be alot more transfering money the same way as the year goes on.

    1. Yeah but you supported Trump’s failure to turn in his tax returns. Hypocrisy at its best. Not to mention, he is the face of the white evangelical racist movement.

      1. “Trump’s failure to turn in his tax returns” How can it be failure if he hasn’t done it? He says he is going to do it and even if he changes his mind, it’s 100% legal. A Community Organizer and professional politician has a simple return. A successful businessman does not.

  5. I guess those bills for the Paris trip are coming due. The most blatant money laundering scheme to funnel payments to himself we have ever seen.

Just another example of his lack of humanity and another self-serving act to enrich himself.

He presently must have a desperate need for cash.

    1. Dear John:
Thank you for the $500K you just gave me.
Could you please Tweetbomb me again? I’d like to move another $500K of your money into my new slush…err, Trip-Up Trump account and I need a little more justification.

      Your bestie,
      Andy

  6. Steve, has he followed through on his promise to transfer back to the City the illegal deferred comp money he gave himself or did that go to his non profit too?

  7. No surprise. Obviously this was his intention all along. This is the reason he didn’t spend these funds on his Gubernatorial bid as they were intended by the contributors. Supposedly he has not been taking a salary from his non-profit. How is he living and supporting his family? Hmmm. Now he doesn’t have to detail how these funds are spent and we can only guess where and how they will be used. Doesn’t take much imagination does it?

    1. He is supporting his family as a CNN contributor and adjunct prof. at Harvard. His wife is also very accomplished so that is bogus. John Morgan is just pissed off and acting like a child. When you are running a campaign, you have to have some money for bills and salaries when it is over. He might have budgeted too well and had some extra left or ads were bumped because there were so many political ads so if he bought a schedule and they couldn’t run it all he would have money he thought spent unspent. So much more complicated than you think.

      1. Gillum gets paid to teach one course 8 week, non-credit course? hmmm. If he does, it’s not enough to pay the bills.

      2. Are you kidding me? If this wasn’t a serious abuse of trust, I would be laughing at your reply. And one more thing….CNN is not paying him the big bucks!

      3. “He might have budgeted too well….”

        HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!! Your killin’ me.

He has just ‘taken’ money before!

      4. Really! He has a crap degree, no experience and is a thief who pled guilty to ethics violations so his brother did not have to testify. CNN is paying him peanuts so he can get free airtime. He is on the brink of indictment and may have already received a target letter.
