UPDATE

The City Commissioners unanimously approved a lease agreement for a TEMPO office at their February 26 meeting.

The lease agreement with Town South LLC totals $21,000 per year for three years, plus a security deposit of $2049.48.

The space will be used for a TEMPO engagement office offering services including voting registration, mentoring and tutoring, and assistance on college and job applications.

The City Commissioners will review an update on the City’s TEMPO program at their February 26 meeting. They will vote on a three-year lease agreement with Town South LLC to house an office for the program.

The Tallahassee Engaged in Meaningful Productivity for Opportunity youth (TEMPO) program began in October 2017 to reach local “disconnected youth,” 16 to 24-year-olds who are not employed or in school.

According to the meeting agenda, so far, the TEMPO program has resulted in positive changes in the areas of poverty, higher education, and public safety, and many participants in the program have enrolled in school or started jobs.

Staff reports that TEMPO now needs an engagement center to provide services to a growing number of program participants.

“Since October 2017, TEMPO participation has increased from an initial annual goal of 70 participants to 850 participants to date with an estimated 1000+ by June 2020,” staff reports. “The continued success and growth of the program calls for an eventual re-engagement site that has the capacity to deliver face-to-face case management, wrap-around services, and childcare.”

According to the meeting agenda, the Community Services Department seeks to establish a TEMPO engagement office at 2526 S. Monroe Street. To do this, the City will need to enter a lease with Town South LLC.

The Commissioners will vote on the lease agreement, totaling $21,000 per year for three years, plus a security deposit of $2049.48.

Staff reports that the office will be within walking distance of Promise Zone census tracts 10.01 and 10.02, as over 40 percent of local disconnected youth live in the Promise Zone.

Staff reports that the office will offer specific services until a TEMPO Reengagement and Technical Center can be built. Services include voting registration, mentoring and tutoring, and assistance on college and job applications.

  1. $1,750 a Month is not that bad BUT, does it say that the Renter must handle all Repairs such as Roof Leaks, if the A/C System dies, Plumbing Issues, etc.?

  2. This is another CYNTHIA BARBER boondoggle. Over Police? REALLY? Another BS ‘brainstorm’ from one without one. Started TEMPO or we she call it TEM-POOH; started in October 2017 – wasn’t this right after the 50 employee lay off 3 month before by the CITY to save money; and NOW Concurrently taking over the Riley hou$e and adding two new (black?) employee$? Come on Commissioners STOP. Call Bull$HIT on Barber, NFBPA, AKA’s and these on going Debacles. FBI – a bit more assistance is in order.

  3. Will it include target practice for trigger happy teens? If they are gonna shoot up traffic and the town, let’s at least teach them to aim better.

  4. They can’t use that library that’s a block away for this? And why does the “program “ have voter registration as a major part of it? Is gillum involved in this?
