Ahead of Leon County School Reopening, COVID Positivity Rate Trending Down

Just over two weeks before the scheduled opening of K-12 schools, the COVID positivity rate in Leon County – measured as a 7-day average – has been trending down over the last 37 days.

As the chart below shows, the positivity rate peaked at 9.57% on July 4th and has trended down to the current 7-day average of 6.29%. This is a 34% decline.

More importantly, approximately 90% of the decline has taken place since July 24th. During this period, there have been 20,581 tests and 1,360 positive results for a positivity rate of 6.6%.

Also, over the last five days, the daily positivity rate has been below 5% for three of those days.

Getting the positivity rate below 5% is one of the criteria some decision makers are using to green light the opening of schools.

For example, New York Governor Cuomo stated that “reopening school districts relies solely on the seven-day rolling average positive test rate for the region where each is located. The threshold for the initial clearance he gave Friday was 5 percent. If positivity rates tick above 9 percent in a given region going forward, the district — and all the schools within it — will have to close.”
