County Commission Candidate Profile: Scott Flowers

Scott Flowers filed to run for Leon County Commission, at Large Group 1 in October 2019. Melissa Villar, Jeff Hendry, Danielle Irwin, Kelly Otte, Robin Colson, and Carolyn Cummings are also running for the position. Incumbent Mary Ann Lindley is retiring.

Flowers is the CEO of Flowers Investment Group, Inc. and the president of Lifebuoy Bookkeeping and Consulting Solutions. In the past, he has worked for the Florida Department of Health and the Florida Department of Revenue, and he has managed several businesses. He received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences from Florida State University. A main focus of Flowers’ campaign is attracting new businesses and organizations to the County to create new jobs and opportunities.

Questions:

What motivated you to run for local office?

“I love our community. I am raising my family here. I am doing this because I’ve seen the great work my friends in business or non-profits are doing in the community, while also seeing bigger challenges our community faces. I believe leadership is more important now than ever before and my skills and experience are what our community needs. I want to help.”

What unique perspective would you bring to the position?

“I am a team-builder and a problem-solver, and I’ve had success doing that at every level. I’ve worked in the corporate world. I’ve owned small businesses and been an entrepreneur, I’ve worked in public service, and I’ve worked with non-profits. I know what it takes to make organizations successful, and I will bring that knowledge and commitment to county government.”

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing Leon County?

“The root of our county’s challenges lie in income disparity and a lack of opportunities to capitalize on the amazing talent and heart our community has to offer. We must create good-paying jobs and solid opportunities to utilize our talent, so our community leads this state as it should.”

What is your plan to address these challenges?

“There are already amazing organizations at work in our community, but they are working alone, with limited resources, and not enough support. I will bring those organizations to the table with county government, be open and honest about the challenges we face, and create a unified vision for a future everyone can work towards together. Government doesn’t need to solve every problem; we need government to provide leadership and resources to allow our amazing community to address the challenges head-on.”

Responsibilities of the County Commissioner position include making policies and setting budgets. The position has a four-year term length and an annual salary of $80,289.00. The election date is August 18.

  1. It amazes me that people are so low and petty to make comments about a persons weight. How superficial and ignorant. Our city needs people that are business minded. Not just those that have depended on the State to provide jobs for our city. If you have never been in private business you have absolutely no idea what it takes to bring a business into our city. Tallahassee has lost so many businesses in the past thirty years because the city sat back and depended on the state. We have good colleges here to provided excellent workers but they always have to leave to get work . Time for Tallahassee to start working to bring good businesses And good Jobs to our town. Business leaders need to have business experience.

  2. I learned a few lessons about people who can only point to “overweight” as a disqualifying factor…they seldom have the mass to say such things in person
    ????

  3. After the last few years, I’ve learned important lesson about overweight men who claim to be successful businessmen but have little experience serving as Leaders in the Civic Community; AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE….

    1. John,

If you were in school you would be suspended for bullying.

You have only provided another reason to vote for Scott Flowers.

  4. WE HAVE ENOUGH OVERWEIGHT POLITICIANS WHO LIKE TO BRAG ON THEIR BUSINESS EXPERIENCE YET CAN’T DEMONSTRATE MUCH SIGNIFICANT, TRULY WORTHY, CIVIC VOLUNTEER OR MILITARY EXPERIENCE WHERE THEY FREELY GAVE OF THEIR TIME TO TRULY HELP THEIR FELLOW MAN (Coaching youth sports is admirable but not a great qualification for Political Leader).

I BELIEVE FUTURE POLITICAL LEADERS SHOULD BE THOSE PERSONS WHO DON’T WAIT TO GET ELECTED TO TRY AND IMPLEMENT CIVIC CHANGE WITH THEIR “GREAT IDEAS”.

FUTURE POLITICAL LEADERS ARE THOSE PERSONS WHO ROUTINELY GO TO PUBLIC MEETINGS/WORKSHOPS AND SERVE ON APPOINTED COMMUNITY BOARDS, ETC. WITHOUT PAY AND ENGAGE AND OFFER UP THEIR GREAT IDEAS/RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHANGE AND VOLUNTEER TO LEAD FOR FREE TO MAKE SURE THE CHANGES HAPPEN IF THEIR “GREAT IDEAS” ARE ACCEPTED.

Tell me your ideas for better government and how you already tried to get these ideas adopted on your own, without having to be an elected official. I want to know you are working for the good of everyone, not just your own self interests.

Long story short, when one doesn’t seem to be in good physical health when they should/could be (if for noone else but their family) and can’t demonstrate truly meaningful previous volunteer time related to civic matters, one doesn’t get my vote because they really only appear to care about themselves.

It is FUN to watch future Elected Wantabees start attending Council meetings a few months before an election, then lose the election, then never get seen at another Council meeting again. WHO WERE THEY REALLY TRYING TO SERVE???

    1. Thank you! You just provided a prime example of the predictable liberal tirade meltdown when they have competition and their own campaigns are in the weeds.

You lost me when you have to resort to personal attacks.

      I Voted for Scott Flowers!!!

    2. A typical Trump Hating Democrat. I would rather have a Businessman in office than a Politician any day. That’s why I voted for TRUMP. We have had way to many Politician / Attorneys running this country, Trump has been the best thing for America in DECADES and I am Voting for him again right along with Scott Flowers.

  5. Flowers is one of the two I’m considering for the seat. However, I’m concerned by the continued drivel about systemic inequalities and/or “disparity” coming from all candidates… without presenting a shred of empirical data to support such declarations. Point to the problem, name it, explain it, define the cause, provide the data that supports the claim… then… present a workable solution with assigned accountability and measurable results. Until then it’s just politically expedient gobbledygook. As far as I can tell, the following is an example of “income disparity”:

~ There are two jobs available. Job “A” pays $20 an-hour and requires 8-years of experience… job “B” pays $12 an-hour and requires no experience. The are two applicants for these two jobs. Candidate “1” has 10-years of experience… candidate “2” has no experience. Results; candidate 1 is hired for job A, and candidate 2 is hired for job B. However, candidate 2 now has the opportunity to gain experience and rise to the income level provided by job A… just like anyone and everyone else.

I’m struggling to see the disparity in this common economic structure.

Best of luck to all candidates, and thank you for the courage to step up and seek the honor of service.

  6. Our tax dollars are going into the black hole and nothing seems to be improving. Hunger, crime, and opportunities seem to be issues. We need more good paying jobs and opportunities and not more CSC programs.

Scott Flowers is exactly the right person at the right time for Leon County.

VOTE Scott Flowers for Leon County Commission At- Large!
