DeSantis Says School Closures Should Be “Off The Table”

Appearing at a Jacksonville charter school, Gov. Ron DeSantis and Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran on Tuesday touted their efforts to reopen classrooms this fall amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

DeSantis said the “physical, mental and social well-being of our kids required us to provide them with the option of in-person learning.” A July reopening order issued by Corcoran drew legal challenges from teachers unions, as teachers and other school employees raised concerns about getting infected with COVID-19. An appeals court sided with Corcoran and DeSantis, who argued that families should be given the option of having their children learn in person or online.

Schools shut down in March after the pandemic hit, forcing students to finish the 2019-2020 school year in online classes. But DeSantis made clear Tuesday he doesn’t want a repeat of the closures.

“Going forward, whatever the future may hold, school closures should be off the table,” he said. “They don’t do anything to mitigate COVID. But they do cause catastrophic damage to the physical, mental and social well-being of our youth. Let’s not repeat any mistakes of the past.”

  1. DeSantis did not lie.
    He used common sense.
Would you prefer to stay at home, then do so; stop expecting people to be conditioned to view their Constitutional rights as selfish.

    1. Hope, We a great governor in Georgia too.
Brian Kemp does what is right for who elected him.
He is not influenced by that Atlanta Mayor Bottoms or that obnoxious chick that thinks she won the election. She suffers from the Hillary syndrome” the election was stolen from me.” Yep the one and only Stacy Abrams. They both thought they were going to be Joe Biden’s VP. Lol

    2. De Santis lied. Closing the schools stopped those locations from being spread sites for the virus. Many students have asthma, diabetes, some are getting cancer treatments, as well as staff, and some staff are over 60. Then let’s talk about the parents, grandparents, or foster hosters of some students regarding their health. But hey, as long as enough people with covid can be hospitalized, I guess he doesn’t care.

      1. There are a lot of school systems that have been open for in person learning for 9 weeks now in the state of Florida. Those counties have NOT seen spikes in either cases , hospitalizations or deaths. You are clearly one of the people who is not paying attention to the data and you are using politics and emotions to guide your decisions and your comments.
