TPD Conducting Patrols to Improve Pedestrian Safety

Three months ago, the Tallahassee Police Department arrested a man linked to a fatal hit-and-run that killed a Florida State University student. Now, TPD is aiming to increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists through education.

“Leon County is one of the top 25 counties in the state for traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists,” according to a press release from TPD.

TPD intends to patrol 10 locations around Tallahassee where most accidents happen, utilizing 20 different officers spreading out to prompt pedestrians to press the button, cross the road at the right time and follow proper bicycle safety rules.

TPD officer Isaac Boykin said the goal is to prevent accidents .

“I hope pedestrians realize, ‘Hey, maybe I shouldn’t dart out on the street if there’s a crosswalk available.’ And if someone has a bicycle but doesn’t have a light, by all means, contact me, and I’ll get a light to put on your bicycle,” Boykin said during a conversation with WTXL.

According to a press release, TPD’s enforcement strategy is not to give out tickets but to educate drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists about the laws of the road. However, violations may result in warnings or citations depending on the circumstances.

The traffic safety patrol is scheduled to continue through May 2021.

  1. Pedestrians are being killed due tpd does not have enough officers to enforce traffic laws. City Manager Goads incompetence is killing people.

  2. “I hope pedestrians realize, ‘Hey, maybe I shouldn’t dart out on the street if there’s a crosswalk available.’

They used to call that “thinnin’ the herd”.

  3. I am sure that West Tennessee Street by FSU and Pensacola Street by all the Student Housing are two places. You should also be out giving Tickets to those J-Walking. $20 for straight J-Walking and $200 for those J-Walking while using their Phone.
