Blueprint Seeks Input on Market District Park

As the process of developing the Market District Park continues, the City of Tallahassee and the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency are hosting community meetings to present park concepts.

There will be three virtual meetings for people to share opinions on the concepts proposed for the Market District Park. The meetings will take place on April 14, 2 – 3:30 p.m. – Zoom Link, April 14, 6 – 7:30 p.m. – Zoom Link, and April 15, 10 – 11:30 a.m. – Zoom Link.

The park consistent of different elements show in the picture above. The main greenspace area, which is 9.8 acres will be used for amenities, pedestrian and recreational purposes. Community input and site design principals will help guide the amenities are featured in the park.

A recent survey asked what three elements people would like to see at the Market District Park. Over 1,200 responses were received. The two responses to receive over 50% were Paths For Running/walking and Shaded Gathering Spaces.

Three elements received between 30% and 50% support. These elements include a Playground, Water Play Elements and Open Spaces.

A number of proposed elements received less than 20% support. They included a Dog Park, an Educational Bike Facility and Skateable features.

The project has a total estimated budget of $11.1 million which is based on project costs developed during the Leon County Sales Tax Citizen Committee’s project development process in 2014.  The estimated costs of the  improvements, updated for current 2020 costs, are included below:

  • Central Park Space: $ 2.4 million
  • Pedestrian, safety & intersection improvements: $5.2 million
  • Sidewalks and Trails: $3.5 million

Listed below is a schedule for the project. Construction is slated to begin this year and be completed in 2023.

  1. Please construct a fence and a hedge type visual barrier along the western side of the park to shield our back yards from the park.

  2. Snidely…… The Commissioners are limited to just $250 BUT, for some reason, there is no limits on PAC Money………..

  3. Also dont underestimate the gratitude expressed by the successful contractors that are awarded the bids to get a piece of that 11.1 Million.
Logically a person may think a few 500. and several smaller campaign contributions would seem so insignificant on an 11.1 Million project that it would not even matter to our elected officials.
Those comparatively small campaign contributions are a very big deal to our local elected officials.
And the selected contractors ALL show their gratitude in that way
