Chiles High School Hires New Boys, Girls Basketball Coaches

Chiles High School recently appointed new head coaches for both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams. Larry Auguste was named the boys coach and Troy Hartmann was named the girls coach.

The coaching positions became open after the previous coaches were removed by the Chiles administration.

Rick Davis was removed in February 2021 from his head coach position with the boys varsity basketball team and was re-assigned as the Dean of Students at Nims Middle School. He left the Timberwolves with an overall record this season of 10-11. De’Ja Jeffery, the former head coach of the girls varsity basketball team, left Chiles in her second season.

The Coaches

Mr. Auguste, originally from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, earned his Associates of Arts degree from Valencia College, his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from University of North Florida in 2014, and finally his Master of Science in Sports Management from American Military University in 2020.

Mr. Auguste’s coaching experience includes several years at the high school level at Duval Charter High School and Baldwin High where his team was a District Champ Regional Runner-up in 2012. In 2017 he gained college coaching experience where he assisted in recruiting, skill development, and scouting, at Florida State College in Jacksonville.

Mr. Troy Hartmann played basketball for Bismarck High School in North Dakota where he was a three-time All-Conference player and a two-time All-Star. Mr. Hartmann also played for Casper College for a year and three years at North Dakota State University.

Hartmann earned his master’s degree in Sport Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse. He has also spent the last 25 years working in sports marketing.

Mr. Hartmann was an assistant coach for a boys Amateur Athletic Union team in Raleigh, NC, the head coach for Durham Middle School girls team, and a co-head coach at the Tallahassee City League level for boys.

The Process

Mike Eto, the Athletic Director for Chiles High School, told TR the coaching positions were advertised on the Florida High School Athletic Association website. Eto said he and an interview committee, made up of parents and another Chiles official, reviewed the candidates and chose candidates for interviews.

The interview committee then met with three candidates for the girls basketball coaching position and six candidates for the boys basketball coaching position.

Once the candidates were interviewed, the committee made recommendations to Principal Joe Burgess and a final meeting was scheduled with Chiles officials. The final decisions on the hires were made by Principal Burgess.

  1. Coach Hartman may be transitioning identifying as a male on the job and a female known as La’Troy off the job.

Nothing to see here parents your daughters are totally safe with Troy and La’Troy

  2. I thought there was no such thing as “boys and girls” anymore. Who will be coaching the Gender Dysphoria Team?
