LCS Approves World Class Schools Agreement

During the May 25th School Board meeting the Board approved an agreement between The Leon County School Board and the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce and a payment of $50,000. The agreement relates to the World Class Schools of Leon County, Inc., a program of the Chamber.

World Class Schools (WCS) is a 501(c)(3) program created by the Chamber of Commerce to engage business and community leaders to enhance academic achievement in Leon County Schools.

The WCS will facilitate and support activities which include input related to career development and curriculum at Lively Technical College, support efforts to prepare students for entry into pre-k/kindergarten, and bolster career exploration and internship opportunities.

WCS projects include Leon Works and the Superintendent’s Teacher Leadership Academy.

Leon Works is a public-private partnership to connect community, employers, academic institutions and students to prepare for the need of employers seeking workers for skilled jobs. The first half of the expo is an opportunity for students to learn from local success stories while visiting with employers and higher education schools.

The Superintendent’s Teacher Leader Academy is convened each for year for 120 district faculty members who have shown leadership potential and prepares them for the next school year through a session of intense workshops. These faculty members are the school department and team leaders, school deans, potential assistant principals and future leaders in the district. This three day event consists of guest speakers, lectures, new school programs and brainstorming sessions amongst attendees.

The agreement also states The Chamber of Commerce may employ a program Director and additional staff to serve at the direction of the Chamber, the LCS Board, and the superintendent. The Director will be a liaison between all parties.

That’s an awful lot of Chiefs for one or just a few Indians. And one has to ask… is the $50k a one-time payment? Are there additional payments slated going forward? Who is going to pay the employment costs of a program Director and additional staff going forward?… admittedly, math was not my best subject in school, but even I know that $50k isn’t going to cover this.
