Leon County Math Assessment Shows 49% Score Satisfactory and Above

The Florida Department of Education recently released statistics reflecting the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) and the End-of-Course (EOC) scores. The information reveals a decline when comparing the 2021 scores to those from 2019. Statewide assessments were not given to students in the 2020 school year, because of school closures and virtual learning during the pandemic.

Performance levels range from 1 to 5, with level 1 as the lowest and level 5 as the highest. For all assessments, level 3 indicates satisfactory performance.

The data reveals the greatest declines were in math, however, the scores in all subjects were affected. Statewide results show 51% of students earned a satisfactory or higher score on the math assessments, a 10% decrease since 2019.

The statewide English-language arts results show a smaller decline. Tests indicate that 53% of students in grades 3 through 10 scored a satisfactory level or higher, down only 3 points.

A similar decline was reported across other subjects.

Statewide results for science assessments for fifth-grade students, show 47% of students earned a satisfactory grade or better, down 6%. Science assessments for eight-grade students indicate a 3% decrease, with 48% earning a level 3 or higher. In civics, grades 5 through 12, 64% of students scored a level 3 or higher down from 71%, or a 7% decrease in 2019.

For Leon County, math scores decreased by 13% since 2019. The testing shows that 49% of students in grades 3 through 8 scored a level 3 or above in 2021, compared to 62% in 2019.

In language arts, the decline was less. Results show that 53% of Leon County students in grades 3 through 10 scored a satisfactory score or higher, down 4 points from two years ago, and exceeding the state by one percentage point.

The science scores for fifth graders decreased by 7%, with 47% of students earning a passing score, and for eighth-graders, 48% of students earned a passing score, a decrease of 4% from 2019.

In June, the FDOE announced reading scores for third graders in Florida. The results showed that “while the statewide percentage of Grade 3 students scoring Level 3 or above on the Florida Standards Assessment and English Language Arts, assessment saw a slight decrease, the data clearly shows that, on average, districts with higher rates of in-person instruction weathered the “COVID slide” better and saw lesser declines between 2019 and 2021 than districts with higher rates of virtual instruction.”

  1. Look at the bright side, they have 75% of them above satisfactory in civics. So they are really good at indoctrinating them, they just can’t get 50% of them to balance an equation…

There is no way in heck I would send my kid to a Leon county school. And I went to Hartsfield, Fairview, Rickards, TCC and FSU! No way JOSE!

  2. Scores equal Rocky’s lack of knowledge in curriculum combined with inept Assistant Supt Gregory. Both ego driven maniacs, legends in their minds, failures in reality.

  3. The day they started Teaching to the Test instead of Testing what they Teach, our Kids were doomed. The pattern is there if you look for it. It is only going to get worse now that they are trying to introduce CRT and Masturbation in Elementary School. And remember people, you must blame Whitie and Trump.

  4. How can “May need additional support” equal ‘Satisfactory’?

Why would an educational institution lower the bar of excellence to this new low?

  5. What a disgrace! This is the problem of having a monopoly for all families that can’t afford a private education.

The public education system should be dismantled; it’s a failure. They should give parents a voucher for each school age child and make it mandatory that each child is enrolled in a school, then get out of the way. It would be much less expensive than the current racket and the population would be much better educated.

  6. Your tax dollars at work… The entire School Board and Superintendent are attending the greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce buffoonery junket at Amelia Island next week on the taxpayers dime so that should Skyrocket the scores.. and to think that only a few election cycles ago Scott Maddox was running for school superintendent.

  7. 1. Atta’ boy Rocky.
    2. Have to love those teachers’ unions.
    3. Adults should be required to obtain licenses to procreate.

  8. Maybe, just maybe, if they forget about Race, Sex, and Trans and get BACK to Old School Teaching, things will Improve.
