State Withholds Pay from Two Florida School Districts

On August 30, 2021, Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran announced that the Florida Department of Education has withheld the monthly school board member salaries in Alachua and Broward County, as directed by the State Board of Education.

This comes after the State Board of Education issued an order to Alachua and Broward County school districts demanding they comply with the state statute and rule, Florida Department of Health Emergency Rule 64DER21-12. Both districts have refused to comply and had previously implemented a mandatory face mask policy that violates parental rights by not allowing a parent or legal guardian to opt their child out of wearing a mask.

Corcoran said in the statement “We’re going to fight to protect parent’s rights to make health care decisions for their children. They know what is best for their children. What’s unacceptable is the politicians who have raised their right hands and pledged, under oath, to uphold the Constitution but are not doing so. Simply said, elected officials cannot pick and choose what laws they want to follow.”

However, just last week Leon County Circuit Judge John C. Cooper stated that the ban on mandates by the governor is an overreach in authority and unconstitutional. The governor’s office said Cooper’s decision was not based on the law and it will appeal.

The Broward County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Vickie L. Cartwright responded in a statement stating, “… The health and safety of our students, teachers and staff continue to be our main priorities. As such, BCPS will continue to mandate masks, knowing the data shows they help minimize the spread of COVID-19 in our schools…”

  1. The big lie and the big liar have you all advocating AGAINST you own best interests. You claim you want schools and businesses to remain open without any mandates of any kind, yet you refuse to do what’s necessary so we can get to that point. If you want kids in seats at school, the adults have to do things to keep schools open. If you want businesses to remain open, you must protect their employees from your infections spreading. How hard is that to understand? I submit, like the school board lady said, this has nothing to do with safety or what’s best for kids or businesses….it’s all about the big lie and the big liar. Rather than admit you were wrong, duped, mislead, or just made a bad decision to support him, you’d rather sacrifice yourselves and your loved ones and your businesses and your political best interests. Do you think for one moment the big liar would sacrifice anything for you? He won’t, and he’s made that clear when he didn’t help a single “tourist” from Jan6th. He riled you up, got you out there, and now what? Nada. Same as he’s doing to RudyG.

  2. @David T Hawkins- COVID being spread through contact of surfaces was WAY over-hyped. Not that there is anything wrong with having your child clean their desk and seats but most kids aren’t going to do that with their peers watching them. You remember how ruthless kids can be to each other.

  3. I wish the insanity would stop. Find a middle ground. I keep hearing that the parents have rights, but I see it as a few parents have rights, and they take away the rights of other parents. Give them there right, but don’t take away mine. If they want to send there kids to school without a mask then let them. But don’t take away my rights, I want my child to wear one, to protect his or her classmates. The mask. We’re protects the other person. So not only do I want my child to learn respect and how to act responsible, I want him or her in a classroom of like kind. So if it is all about parents rights, I want tight for my child to be in a classroom that all wear mask, so that they all learn to respect one another, and to AKV responsibility for their actions. Why can I not have that right, so that my child can be protected and be safe. Have one school in each districts for those kids whose parents want them to not wear mask, let all other schools in the district wear mask. That way all parents have the right to what is in their childs best interest. Instead we are playing politics, kids are dying, and they are dying because only some parents have rights. And the politicians who are suppose to protect and govern all are allowing only a few parents to have there rights. Even if others are harmed. Give all parents there rights, send those who don’t want mask to one school and all others to the rest of the schools. At the end of the year if more kids died in the school without mask than in the mask school we will know mask work, if not at least each parent had the right to do it there way, rather than politicians who claim there for the people, but only allow one side of parents to have there way.

  4. I just wish our Governor could find it in his heart to put the FDLE on the task of ferreting out local elected officials guilty of corruption in Leon County and for that matter the remaining 66 counties in Florida. Why does everyone think thats a job for the law enforcement branch of the Democratic Party AKA the FBI?
Come on Governor this totally needs to happen!!!

  5. Thank you for standing strong, Commissoner Corcoran. This is not the children’s disease. Mask mandates for schoolchildren are based on fear (at best) or deception (at worst.) Honest science is on our side.

  6. Thank you Commissioner Corcoran!

Thank you for not caving in to a diabolical agenda, but doing what is best for our children and their education. The mandates are not being made by the chief medical officer and anything less is practicing medicine without a license. Also, the data is sketchy, missing, manipulated, and sent out to further a political agenda. Also missing is the story of who is profiting.

Again, I humbly thank you for doing your job and standing up for the rights of parents and their children. God Bess You!

  7. PARENTS, send your Kids to School with the Wipes and with Hand Sanitizer so they can keep their Hands Clean and their Desk Wiped down.
