Leon County Approves Opioid Settlement Structure

The Leon County Board of County Commissioners consented to the proposed opioid litigation Memorandum of Understanding with the State of Florida and the adoption of the associated resolution.

Leon County has previously approved a plan related to the litigation.

In June 2018, the County entered into a contract with outside counsel, Levin, Papantonio, P. A., and Parks Law, LLC, to represent the County in multi-district opioid litigation (MDL) against opioid manufacturers, distributors, and retailers.

The Florida State Attorney began holding meetings in 2020 with the local governments of Florida to negotiate a unified plan. The Unified Florida Plan’s purpose is the allocation and use of all opioid settlement proceeds obtained through the Purdue Pharma L.P. bankruptcy, the Mallinckrodt PLC bankruptcy, settlement with the Cardinal Health, Inc., McKesson Corp., and AmersourceBergen Corp. (distributors), and settlement with Johnson & Johnson, as well as any other settlements obtained related to the MDL.

According to the Memorandum of Understanding with the State, all funds received will be divided into three separate accounts, the City/County Fund, Regional Fund, and State Fund. It is currently contemplated that settlement payments will be paid over 18 years.

The City/County Fund will receive approximately 15% of the total settlement proceeds.

The Regional Fund will receive roughly 30% and 40% of the total settlement amount, based on a sliding scale. The funds will be allocated between qualified counties and non-qualified counties, based on population amounts over or under 300,000 persons. Leon County’s population is 292,198 according to the 2020 census and therefore is a non-qualified county. Thus, Leon County would not receive a direct allocation of the Regional Fund under the Unified Florida Plan.

The State Fund consists of the remaining 45% to 50% of the total settlement amount. The State will expend remaining funds on approved purposes.

Participation in the Unified Florida Plan by Florida municipalities and counties will increase the amount of funds to the State of Florida and should improve Florida’s relative bargaining position during additional settlement negotiations.

  1. Will the taxpayers be filing suit for the TV AD promoting vaccines that features County Administrator Vince Long? To recoup the money for the publicity close-up shots, and unauthorized funds used to produce the AD?

Who paid for the AD, what PR firm produced the TV AD, and who approved the AD?

The only person who should be doing a TV AD promoting vaccines is the Chief Medical Officer or the Surgeon General.

Hopefully someone will investigate this and report.

  2. Why are you going after the opioid manufacturers, distributors, and retailers? The Manufacturers make it because it is needed, the Doctors are the ones who prescribe it, the”distributors, and retailers” AKA: Pharmacist, fills the Prescriptions on the Doctors Orders (they are not allowed to second guess the Doctors). So why are THEY the ones paying the price for those selling it on the Street? ALSO, what will you be doing with all that Money? We have enough Nonprofits that handle Drug Addictions and there are enough Programs as well. The City and County do not own Hospitals, do not own Insurance Companies so how does Drug Addiction costs the City and County.

  3. Will Leon County be filing suit against the Dementia Joe Biden Sadministration for his treasonous open border “Invade and Destroy America” policy?… the very same policy that is intentionally flooding our country with north of 2-million un-vaccinated, un-masked, un-tested, un-vetted, disease carrying, criminal, illegal alien ganbangers… along with enough (China manufactured) fentanyl to kill far more Americans than even the Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex has?

… just asking for a friend
