The Walt Disney Company Announces Million Dollar Grant to FAMU

Walt Disney Company announced a donation of 1 million dollars to Florida A&M University (FAMU) School of Journalism and Graphic Communication (SJGC) on October 28th.

According to The Walt Disney Company, the $1-million investment is part of Disney’s mission to provide more equitable access to marginalized voices that have been historically underrepresented across the journalism, media, and television industries.

The grant will provide financial assistance to 15-20 selected high achieving students including tuition, housing scholarships, a stipend, specialized programing, mentoring, leadership development and more. The donation will be paid off over a five-year period.

ABC News President and FAMU alumna Kimberly Godwin announced the grant during the FAMU Homecoming Convocation stating, “Florida A&M University changed my life. I first set foot on campus as a shy 16-year-old girl but graduated as a confident journalist prepared to tackle the biggest news stories.” She continued, “This gift brings me so much joy because I truly understand how much it’s going to change lives-and set the course for success for generations to come in some families.  My joy is exponentially greater knowing that Disney is investing in the next generation of journalists-straightforward, innovative storytellers representing diverse communities from around the county.” She went on to say, “I hope that this donation from the Walt Disney Company will allow the next generation of bold, straightforward journalist to uncover their potential and achieve their dreams.”

FAMU President Larry Robinson responded to the donation stating, “Wow, I can’t be more thankful and appreciative of the million-dollar gift that they provided us to support our students primarily in the school of journalism and graphic communication.  It’s going to make a huge difference in the lives of our students”

According to The Walt Disney Company, through social investment and programs like Disney Future Storytellers, the company is increasing access to careers in media, entertainment, technology, and hospitality and helping ensure the stories being told across the industry accurately reflect the rich diversity of the world we live in.

The School of Journalism and Graphic Communication was established in 1982 and will now be celebrating their 40th anniversary for the rest of the year.
