LOCAL NEWS

Evan Power, the Chair of the Leon County Republican Party, appeared on The Steve Stewart Show on Real Talk 93.3 last week to discuss the 2022 election cycle. Power noted the importance of the Corey Simon victory for local Republicans. Power also stated that he believed local Republican’s would field candidates in the 2024 race for Leon County Commission District 4 -currently held by Brian Welch – and would challenge Superintendent Rocky Hanna, who recently filed to run for re-election.

In a filing last Thursday, the City of Tallahassee asked a judge to dismiss a federal lawsuit filed by former Citizens Police Review Board (CPRB) member Taylor Biro. Biro was removed from the CPRB by the Tallahassee City Commission late last year in a 3-2 vote. Her removal was related to her abolitionist views of law enforcement. Following her removal, Biro filed a lawsuit arguing her free speech rights were violated.

A tire blowout led to the death of a Tallahassee woman from Friday afternoon. Florida Highway Patrol responded to a crash after a 79-year-old woman’s rear tire blew and caused her to drive into the oncoming lane on State Road 20 in Leon County. Her car was subsequently t-boned by a pickup truck that attempted to swerve out of the way to avoid her. The driver of the truck that struck her car was taken to the hospital for serious injuries. The woman died at the scene.

FLORIDA NEWS

Florida lawmakers are moving forward with their plans to expand state control over Walt Disney World’s Reedy Creek Improvement District. This comes after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis threatened for the state to take more action after Disney got involved in vocalizing their opposition to the Parental Rights in Education bill. The legislature might make a series of changes that could include: the state dictating who would run the district, the district’s debt could not be transferred to nearby local governments, and renaming Reedy Creek.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an executive order activating the Florida National Guard and directing state law enforcement agencies and other state agencies to provide resources in support of local governments responding to the alarming influx of migrants landing in the Florida Keys. DeSantis, in the press release, criticized President Joe Biden for ignoring “his legal responsibilities” and opting to take measures into his own hands.

SPORTS NEWS

Florida State football’s Jared Verse announced he will be returning to the Noles for the 2023 season. Verse played in 12 games and recorded 48 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, nine sacks, a fumble recovery, and a blocked field goal. He was viewed by some NFL scouts as possibly the second ranked defensive end that was eligible for the NFL draft.

Florida State women’s basketball fell to the Boston College Eagles 77-71 in overtime yesterday. Boston College guard Sara Bejedi recorded a career-best 26 points on Sunday, going 7-of-12 from the floor, 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. It was just the first conference loss this year for the Noles.

Florida State men’s basketball got the win on Saturday over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 75-64. Matthew Cleveland earned his fifth consecutive double double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds as the Noles move to 3-2 in the ACC.

  1. The bigger story on Evan Power is that he involves himself and the Republican Party in helping Democratic Party candidates get elected in Leon County. He should resign.
