The Florida House officially passed a permitless concealed carry bill on Friday. The chamber voted 76-32 in favor of the bill on a largely party-line vote. Rep. Vicki Lopez, a Miami Republican, broke with her party and voted against the bill. Eleven lawmakers did not vote. The Senate companion bill is set to be heard on the Senate floor.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is defending a set of companion bills that will make it easier to sue media outlets for alleged defamation. “I think what the bill is doing now is basically saying that if somebody is defamed … that if they’re using anonymous sources, then that can be a presumption that that was done with malice. Because if not, then there’s no way you could ever have a defamation action,” DeSantis said. DeSantis said that the issue particularly in view is corporate media outlets using anonymous sources to intentionally smear.

  1. Goad and Daley need to get these knowledgeable insiders silenced. Same old same old. We still have a city manager engineered by Maddox, still loyal and will always protect that crowd to whom he owes his position. National search for a real professional without these good old boy links to the insiders

  2. The defamation lawsuit stuff is completely terrible, totally against constitutional rights. Public needs more accountability, more sources, not more powerful people filing lawsuits against critics

  3. PBA deal was rushed and highly suspect, especially combined with firing longtime department director who raised concerns about Revell and Goad playing favorites.

Last year the police Union spent big, $50k in tax-funded union dues to a Maddox-affiliated political committee attacking Matlow. No doubt they’ll get aggressive against Porter for her efforts to reform status quo. Probably will waste even more this time, funded by this taxpayer pension hike.

  4. Anonymous sources are crucial to getting a lot of news items into public view. I shudder to think how much would be hidden without them. But it does appear that we need a better balance between protecting a legitimate source and protecting an agenda.

  5. To many times lately the Media has been using what THEY call are an “Anonymous Source” which tells me it is just something they made up and claim it was an anonymous source that gave it to them.
