FLORIDA NEWS

Escalating his attacks on Walt Disney Co., Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday announced plans to revoke changes made by the former Reedy Creek Improvement District board and to increase state oversight of the entertainment giant’s theme-park rides.

A top GOP donor, Thomas Peterffy, said he is planning on stopping contributions to a potential Ron DeSantis 20204 presidential bid. While DeSantis has not announced any candidacy, Peterffy said “I have put myself on hold” because “of his stance on abortion and book banning … myself, and a bunch of friends, are holding our powder dry.” DeSantis recently signed a six-week abortion ban and Education Secretary Manny Diaz has refuted claims of book banning, insisting that books are not being banned, but rather pornographic and “indoctrination” books have no place in Florida’s education system.

In the wake of Gov. Ron DeSantis signing the six-week abortion ban, Florida Republicans signaled a split over the abortion issue. The House Republicans who voted against it include: Mike Caruso, Karen Gonzalez Pittmann, Peggy Gossett-Seidman, Sam Killebrew, Chip LaMarca, Vicky Lopez, and Rick Roth.

  1. But the books arent banned…. You can go read them right now. $8.99 ebook version available on amazon if you really want to read about Two Boys kissing.

  2. WOW, it looks like a few of you would be OK with your little Toddlers to have a subscription to Penthouse Magazine or even a Magazine depicting Gays having sex. DeSantis didn’t Ban those Books from the Store Shelves or the Public Libraries, just from Grade Schools which I thank him for. Let KIDS BE KIDS.

  3. Who gets to decide what children are exposed to? That’s the beauty of parental rights, school vouchers, and living in a republic where we get to vote for who governs.

  4. I’m not sure why you get to be the ultimate authority on what comprises pornographic material. I’m reasonably intelligent and pretty well read…what if I disagree? I find the Bible offensive. Do I get to claim it’s pornography?

  5. The examples you cited are pornography, books that have no place in an elementary school library.
Y’all are being obtuse, the anarchist cookbook has been banned for 40 years but no one accused Florida of being a book banning state until leftists like yourselves tried to convince us that a man can become a woman if he wants to by indoctrinating our children into thinking that kind of mental illness is perfectly Ok. It’s not.
Some books need to be banned in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARIES, because that’s what we are talking about. Every one of the examples cited by DSP and the other one are available in bookstores and online so they are NOT banned by definition.

Teach them to read, teach them to cipher, and teach them a little healthy skepticism. When you start to try to teach children things that are antithetical to their religion and the way parents are raising them. you are gonna have a big problem.

Y’all are gonna have to regroup…

  6. The only standards that Desantis has are those that enrich him and his select bestest friends. For example, the proposed law that provides a public records exemption for all of DeSantis’s movements. Think how that will benefit those GOP sex traffickers flying anywhere with him: sounds really great to Dennis Hastert, Mark Foley, Roy Moore, Jim Jordan, Matt Gaetz and his cohorts, etc., etc. And let’s not forget all the potential visits to and with white nationalists and dark money donors. Yep, now we see the kind of Free Florida despot Ron REALLY wants…no Sunshine for him makes him and those with him totally free.

  7. No books have been banned?

    From https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/miami-bookstores-react-to-floridas-banned-books-14296052

“In Florida, the majority of banned books touch on race (How to Be an Antiracist by Ibrahim Kendi, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison), sexuality (Forever by Judy Blume, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley), and sexual orientation and gender identity (Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan, Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe). This comes as the Republican-led Florida legislature has passed laws such as the Stop WOKE Act (HB 7), which prohibits teaching Critical Race Theory in schools, and the so-called Don’t Say Gay bill, which bans instruction involving gender and sexual orientation for many young students.”

  8. None of the people that are constantly screaming about book banning can name a single title. It’s like the “don’t say gay bill” that Steve and his colleagues can’t seem to mention by its actual title without including the “don’t say gay” critique. And it doesn’t matter that the phrase or sentiment cannot be found anywhere in the bill. They’re just making it up and selling it to the uninformed… and they don’t care if half of us know they are lying.

  9. I was hoping for the article on Attorney Ben Crump’s GoFundMe defense fund for Andrew Gillum giving us the run down.

  10. With the 6 Week Abortion issue, I am wondering if DeSantis is taking a Page from Jeb Bush’s Playbook. If you remember, Jeb wanted to open up over a Million Acres of the Gulf Coast to Oil Exploration and Drilling……… every one raised hell over that so he settled for just 100,000 Acres and everyone was okay after that. I believe that is all he actually wanted. DeSantis did the 15 Week Abortion Ban and everyone is raising hell about it so now went down to 6 Weeks and every one is really hammering him over that. I think if he gets them so angry over the 6 Week Ban, they might settle for the 15 Week Ban instead.

  11. I hope Thomas Peterffy tells us who he and his bunch of friends are going to fund so that me and a bunch of my friends can be sure to vote for someone else.

  12. Finally, a politician that puts his standards and morals above the politics of the day. Thanks you for standing up for what you believe is right.
You have my vote, Gov. DeSantis.
