LOCAL NEWS

The blue signs at 11 Leon County intersections have sparked a lot of talk. They urge the public to donate to service providers like the nonprofit Big Bend Continuum of Care, rather than giving directly to people panhandling on the street. But the need for solutions is growing faster than the response.

The costs of installing turf fields at Leon County High Schools has changed dramatically over the last six years, from $910,000 in 2017 to $2.5 million in 2023 – a 175% increase. Get the details.

Two shootings occurred overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning. The first shooting occurred around 6:00 p.m. on the 2000 block of Warwick Street near Lake Bradford Road. No arrests have been made. Similarly, a shooting at a Circle K around 1:00 a.m. Thursday on the 3400 block of Crawfordville Road led to one victim and one suspect being arrested.

FLORIDA NEWS

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said that Ukraine joining NATO is a “non-starter” and came out opposed the Biden administration sending cluster bombs to Ukraine. DeSantis said it would escalate the conflict. He also said that admitting Ukraine into NATO makes it more likely the United States will be dragged into a war.

DeSantis also said he is not interested in being a Vice Presidential pick. He said that he doesn’t view himself as a “No. 2 guy.” Former President Donald Trump noted that he much more likely would have considered DeSantis as a VP pick had DeSantis not run for president.

After Farmers Insurance announced they are leaving Florida and Citizens Property Corp. announcing they are taking on more insurance policies, AAA Insurance is dropping a small percentage of homeowner insurance policies in Florida due to the need to manage risk and catastrophe exposure. Operational expenditures, hurricane season, and inflationary rises were reasons they cited for ending the insurance policies.

SPORTS NEWS

Florida State head football coach Mike Norvell is on of 21 coaches named to the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Preseason Watch List. Norvell enters his fourth year after a 10-3 season in 2022. Outlets like Athlon Sports and 247 Sports have each predicted Florida State to be ACC Champions this year.

  1. Mr David

You are correct about Jack Campbell more than you know. He is notorious for over prosecuting the innocent and under prosecuting the guilty. He should have been prosecuted himself a long time ago. The truth will come out. I believe he has one of the worst records in the state.

  2. Cannongossip

Anyone who criticizes DeSantis or Trump without including the long list of the Biden missteps, corruption, collusion, and treason is automatically dispatched into the pool of idiots who don’t have a platform of their own. That is their platform.

  3. DeSantis said he doesn’t view himself as a “No. 2 guy.”
But Ron, you are already SO good at being a really big #2!

  4. I got to blame some of the Crime Rate on D.A Jack Campbell. A bunch of People hanging out in the Parking Lot of a Business on Pensacola Street, someone gets angry and goes to their Car and gets a Gun, they then SHOOT into the Crowd. Shooter is caught and only charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon INSTEAD OF several counts of Attempted MURDER. ANYTIME someone shoots at someone in anger, THAT is Attempted Murder. Too many Attempted Murders are being charged as Assault or reduced down to Assault and THAT happens with the D.A.

  5. I have to disagree with DeSantis on Ukraine joining NATO. Whether Ukraine “joins” NATO or Russia is academic. It’s clear that Putin wants to expand Russia’s border and he has no problem with grabbing countries that border NATO, putting Russia’s border adjacent to NATO.

But the U.S. has to put more pressure on NATO members to pay their bills. This current administration uses the taxpayer credit card like there is tomorrow. Throwing money at NATO when NATO members won’t pay their own way is foolishness.

  6. I don’t think Curtis Richardson or DWC are successful – in their district – to curb crime. They receive an F.

They need to focus on their job and not their bundled contributions and KICKBACKS to their campaigns.

  7. The Circle-K shooting involved a private security guard working the property. It’s unclear if the man shot was involved in a crime when he got shot.

  8. With more and more black on black crime involving a shooting, Bubba Crump and Allen Sharpton are really missing the boat. If the just made half the stink they normally make about a white guy shooting a black guy with Tally’s black on black shootings, they could triple their workload/billable hours.

  9. Finally someone took a positive action to deal with the homeless problem. Last Sunday, a homeless bum was in the Thomasville Road Walmart and he reeked of urine. The humane solution is give the homeless two choices: go to a shelter or move on. Homelessness doesn’t give anyone the right to squat on public or private property.
