National: UN Approves Gaza Cease-Fire, US Abstains

Israel canceled a diplomatic visit by its senior advisers to Washington, DC, yesterday after the UN Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all hostages. The approval comes after four previous attempts failed.

The US, one of 15 council members, abstained from voting, while the rest of the council (see overview) voted in favor of the legally binding resolution. The resolution calls for a halt in fighting for the remainder of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, which ends in roughly two weeks. The US said it abstained because the resolution didn’t condemn Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the US for not vetoing the resolution, saying the language used didn’t explicitly tie the cease-fire to the release of the hostages.

An Israeli delegation was previously set to meet the Biden administration today for talks on Israel’s imminent ground operation in Rafah, where an estimated 1 million Palestinians are sheltering. The Biden administration still plans to raise its concerns with Israel’s defense minister, who is in Washington this week on a separate trip.

  1. The pro Hamas voting blocks in Minnesota and Michigan did not originate by accident. Democrats made them. Now we have a radical uneducated voting block influential in our government.

  2. Biden not going against a Country when he should, leads me to believe that he wont for one of Two Reasons (or both). ONE: He received a LOT of Money from them through Hunter. TWO: They might expose proof to the World of his Corruption.

  3. I sure this made Sandy Cortez and her Hamas Squad very happy. These Progressive Marxist Democrats are now – and always have been – the real racists, bigots, and antisemites in our country.

  4. Hamas sucks, none of their neighbors who actually don’t want to absorb Palestinians suck, and wacko Muslim extremists suck even more, but Israel has created uncountable number of people who will dream of nothing but seek revenge after relentlessly bombing civilian areas to dust leaving orphans, widows, and parents pulling their children from rubble.

We don’t belong on either side of this disaster. The fact that Israel is the only democracy in the area shouldn’t allow them to have an outsized influence on our policy; the hard line Zionists that vote are just as crazy as any other extremists that think sky Santa is telling them it’s OK to build settlements where other people were living.

Biden is a coward for abstaining from the vote, though that might be better than Trump who likely would only vote for more widespread bombing.
