Tallahassee City Commission Meeting Briefs: March 27, 2024

Below are the Tallahassee City Commission meeting briefs that took place on March 27th, 2024.

The Commission received an update on the Council on the Status of Men and Boys (CSMB) by the Executive Director Royle King. The Council’s mission is to reduce homicides and non-fatal shootings in the community under a multi-disciplinary plan. CSMB has also begun working in schools to reach youth. Currently, they’re working with youth at Second Chance Success Academy at the Ghazvini Learning Center, and are providing life coaching at Rickards, Godby and Leon High School since January 1, 2024. Additionally, CSMB has successfully assisted 18 youth previously expelled from their home zoned school in returning to school without any significant problems.

The Commission unanimously accepted the final report of the 2024 Charter Review Committee and scheduled a discussion of the recommendations for the April 10, 2024, City Commission meeting.

The Commission unanimously voted to authorize the City Manager to negotiate and execute a contract with H.A. Contracting Corp for the construction of the City’s Southside Transit Center. According to the item, the project is expected to provide equitable, sustainable, and efficient transportation services to a historically underserved area of the community. Additionally, the current funding for this project is $20 million.

The Commission voted 4-1 to approve the extensions of Velda Dairy Rd connecting with Ox Bottom Rd and installation of a traffic signal at its intersection with Thomasville Rd. Additionally, the agreement provides a concurrency credit to the developer for the dedication of the land for the Velda Dairy Rd extensions right-of-way, and the cost of the land. Commissioner Porter voted no.

The Commission unanimously approved an item that seeks the City Commission to apply for two U.S Department of Energy grant programs. The first program is the Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships program. This program would provide $30,000,000 over five years for the Griffin Heights Electric Resilience: storage system and modernization project. The second program is the Distributed Energy Systems Demonstrations Program. This grant would provide $13,000,000 over eight years for the Assets for Optimal and Resilient Grid Operations project.

The Commission unanimously voted for the City Manager to negotiate a loan agreement for $9,916,940 from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Loan proceeds will be appropriated to support projects required by federal regulation to mitigate potential drinking water quality issues associated with lead and copper water service lines.

The Commission unanimously approved to amend Chapter 1 and Chapter 10 of the Tallahassee Land Development Code (TLDC) regarding the definition and development standards for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU). Since the current standards of the TLDC regarding ADUs are found to be restricting, the Ordinance has been drafted to update and improve the standards related to ADUs. Revisions include allowing the maximum size of the ADU to be 1,200 sq. ft., and allowing the option for shared or separate utility connections and street address with the primary resident.

  1. I cant wait to see the reactions from the city commissioners when ADU start to appear in their neighborhoods. Perhaps even right next-door to their house.

  2. “ Additionally, CSMB has successfully assisted 18 youth previously expelled from their home zoned school in returning to school without any significant problems.”
Millions of tax payor dollars spent and we continually see these absymal student numbers, plus, without “…any significant problems..”

How about at lesst quaruple that number and no further student problems?

  3. One day a “fly over” will be proposed for Thomasville Rd
so vehicles don’t have to be slowed by all the traffic signals.

  4. I have preached about this for Years now, even in my Campaign running for County Commissioner. What needs to happen in our Schools is a new Class that is mandatory for all 5th thru 10th Grades called “Crime & Consequences”. The object is to show the Kids how doing just the slightest Crime can destroy their Life.

$20 Million for the Southside Transit Center? wouldn’t it be cheaper to just add more Bus Stops?

Hasn’t Construction on the Velda Dairy Rd connecting with Ox Bottom Rd already been going on for over a Year now? Also, is that even in the City Limit? If so, when did THAT happen?

SO, if Copper Pipes are bad, that just leaves Polybutylene and PVC Pipes. Polybutylene Pipes are also not good, they are prone to Leaks and Breakage a lot so now, that just leaves PVC, good luck with that. Try worrying about Sewage Spills, Chemicals and Run Offs destroying our Drinking Water.

Revisions include allowing the maximum size of the ADU to be 1,200 sq. ft.? That’s bigger than my House. Drop it down to 650 sq. ft. That will cover a Big Bedroom with a big Full Bath and Walk-In Closet, a large Kitchen and huge Family Room with a Coat Closet. Anything bigger is a House and should be labaled as such.
