On Wednesday the Tallahassee City Commission will receive an update that indicates the construction of the new Tallahassee Police Department headquarters has an anticipated cost of $135 million for the 137,000 square-foot facility. See cost comparisons for other Florida cities.

The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office confirmed an investigation is ongoing after a person died at St. Marks Saturday morning. WCSO, fire rescue, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida Highway Patrol responded to a call regarding a “possible drowning” around 8 a.m. The location of the incident was allegedly near the St. Marks Lighthouse.

In a recent interview with The Floridian, Florida State Sen. Corey Simon said he is initially supportive of the ideas of Sen. Blaise Ingoglia’s proposed bill allowing Florida to imprison and deport illegal immigrants. But he held of endorsing the legislation completely before looking at the language of the bill.

Former Florida Gov. and U.S. Senator Bob Graham will lie in state at the Florida Historic Capitol. Graham will be moved there the morning of Friday, April 26. Graham will lie in state from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Following this, Graham will be taken to a cemetery for a private, family-only service

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has directed $750 million a year to the state’s environmental needs, the latest addition to the billions in taxpayer dollars he has earmarked to repair various ecosystems and to combat invasive species. The $750 million is from an agreement with the Seminole Tribe of Florida to share gambling revenue with the state.

A recent poll from Florida Atlantic University’s Communication and Public Opinion Research Lab and Mainstreet Research, a Canada-based polling firm, show that only 47 percent voters are supportive of a recreational marijuana ballot measure. But while 35% oppose it, there are 18% who are undecided.

The Supreme Court today will hear arguments on whether a US city can fine or jail people for sleeping outside. The hearing comes amid a rise in housing costs and record levels of homelessness; last year, more than 650,000 people in the US were estimated to be homeless on any given night.

The US military will fully withdraw its roughly 1,000 troops from Niger after the two sides failed to reach a deal allowing American forces to remain in the country, officials said over the weekend. The frayed alliance ends eight months after the Niger military overthrew the government, a move eventually designated as an illegal coup by the US. 

The Senate passed a law reauthorizing part of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act minutes after Friday’s midnight deadline, overcoming opposition from privacy advocates and former President Donald Trump.
