As Gov. Ron DeSantis pushes to slash property taxes, a House select committee is expected to meet Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 to resume looking at the issue.
The House Select Committee on Property Taxes is tentatively scheduled to meet during the afternoon of Sept. 22 and the morning of Sept. 23, according to a document posted on the House website. Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, established the select committee this spring, and it met twice in May.
DeSantis wants lawmakers to place a proposed constitutional amendment on the November 2026 ballot aimed at cutting property taxes. Lawmakers likely will consider the issue during the 2026 legislative session, which will start in January.
DeSantis and state Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia have launched audits of some local governments as they try to build support for cutting property taxes. Local governments rely heavily on property taxes to fund services.

There should be no property taxes, period. You don’t own property to pay rent to the state.
If I can’t do that, then I don’t own the property, the state does.

Several states omit school taxes for people over 65. This should apply to all Florida Seniors. In Broward County, they literally waste our property tax dollars by spending $800,000 for a float in the Rose Bowl Parade in California and on ridiculous Green New Deal projects. Where is the Integrity of these people as Seniors struggle every day to pay bills, buy food and medicine, and simply enjoy what is left of their life?
If you’re 65 and you have no mortgage, you should have no property tax.
There should be a flat tax or at the very least a cap. Its not fair im paying 3x more than my neighbor for a similar house. Or 20x less than somone in Killarn or southwood. Everyone should pay the same amount for the same govt.
At the very least, make it where those 65 and older no longer have to pay Property Taxes or any of the Fee’s tacked on to them.
