School Taxes, Rural Counties Eyed

By The News Service of Florida

A House panel created to look at the possibility of cutting property taxes will receive presentations next week about a series of issues including school taxes and rural counties. The House Select Committee on Property Taxes is scheduled to meet from noon to 4 p.m. Monday as Gov. Ron DeSantis pushes to put a proposed constitutional amendment on the 2026 ballot to slash property taxes.

Lawmakers are expected to consider such proposals during the legislative session that starts in January. House Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, established the select committee this spring, and it met twice in May.

Schools and local governments rely heavily on property taxes to pay for services. A notice for Monday’s meeting said the select committee will receive presentations about school taxes; homestead property-tax benefits; tax millage rates; and what are known as “fiscally constrained” counties. Those counties include many of the state’s rural areas that have limited tax bases.

  1. Here is my thought, if you do away with Property Taxes in Florida, can you replace what the School Budgets in Florida will lose by increasing the amount that the Florida Lottery gives them to make up for it? Maybe even create a special Scratch Off Ticket to cover some of it. You can call the Scratch Off’s “HALL PASS” or “SCHOOL ZONE”.
