The Institute for Governance and Civics (IGC) at Florida State University recently published their findings after surveying 1,234 Florida voters before the 2024 general election about trust in public schools. They found that an “alarming” number of Floridians do not trust K-12 schools, and that their distrust primarily comes from the concerns that schools have become overly politicized.

  1. Why should we trust public schools? Earlier in my life a public education in the U.S. was the best in the world. It has slid to #41, with several of the world’s hell-holes outranking us.

The “cost” of a public school student in Florida is now over $17,000/year. Put 30 kids in a classroom and the taxpayer cost is over half a million dollars. Now consider where the money goes. I can build a classroom for 30 kids for under $100,000. Let’s budget $50,000 for desks, chairs, whiteboards, books, etc. Let’s pay the teacher well at $75,000 and budget $25,000 for utilities and miscellaneous. We’ve spent $250,000, but that’s the first year cost. The next year the building and setup are in place so the real operational cost is $100,000, as it will be most years. Where did the other $400,000 go? Every year….

  2. I am sure FAMU wasn’t invited to join in for a reason or two or three. One being look how many times they have had money issues over the last 10 years alone, either it was skimmed off the top or lost or miss placed or embezzled. If they don’t get to play, I am sure they will call it RACIST.
