The argument from the poverty lawyers is that poor people with utilities cant afford the $20 a month fee, FOR FIRE PROTECTION. “I don’t know how we can justify someone who lives in a mobile home paying the same fee as someone that lives in a single family home or any permanent structure,” Caban said. “It’s not fair, it’s not equitable. It’s a regressive tax and it needs to be changed.”
The same fee for the same service is the definition of FAIR.
I thinking that FL has not authorized cities (and maybe counties) to fund operations that way. And I’d argue that it isn’t about taxing the rich more (though their homes are typically bigger and more spread out therefore needing bigger/more equipment/gas use and maybe something else). What every community works for is good enough coverage that their citizen home owners’ insurance is affordable.
Just wow on the fire fee. Theyre claiming its unfair because its equal for everyone and therefore doesnt tax the rich more. We need to accelerate the demise of property tax before the ACLU starts using it to fund every liberal pet project. Sales tax is at least FLAT.
“The ACLU of Florida and the Southern Poverty Law Center is suing the City of Tallahassee over its fire services fee.”
A foolish and misguided endeavor. Funny how we hear not a peep for decades. I wonder if we can fund essential services by eliminating the massive fraud that permeates the welfare system.
