Local & State News

On Wednesday, Leon County high school principals sent out emails to parents and students addressing the consequences of demonstrations addressing the national controversy over ICE enforcement of federal immigration laws. Details.

TPD crime incident numbers for January 2026 are in. The numbers show that property crime and violent crime incidents are up when compared to January 2025. The broader 12-month trends show that property incidents, after months of declining, have leveled out while violent crime incidents, after declining, are trending up. Details.

A bill regulating electricity and water use by large data centers is advancing in the Florida Senate but has not yet moved in the House.

The Florida Senate has delayed releasing its proposed 2026–27 budget by a week while waiting for the House to act.

The Washington Post yesterday announced it is laying off one-third of its staff, reportedly over 300 people. The Jeff Bezos-owned paper will enact changes, including restructuring its local news division, scaling back foreign coverage, and eliminating the sports desk.

Border czar Tom Homan says 700 immigration officers will leave Minnesota immediately (More).

  1. Why are there tags for Andrew Gillum? Why are the tags even visible, do you need a web developer? This looks really bad, unless a middle schooler is doing it, then it’s great!

  2. Less than half the students can read the email at their current grade level, so I question the principal’s chosen method of communication.

    An outrageously offensive viral tweet would probably be a lot more effective…
