National champs! The ladies soccer team has won its second national championship in five years. Over the weekend they defeated number one seeds Stanford and North Carolina to claim the title. On Friday night Florida State handed Stanford its first loss in 45 matches defeating the Cardinal 2-0 with goals by defenders Gabby Carle and Malia Berkeley. This win coupled with a victory versus North Carolina in the ACC championship match gave the Seminoles all the confidence they needed going into the final.
The match was even on the scoreboard and in terms of how the teams are playing all the way up until the 60th minute. After North Carolina’s attack was stopped, the Seminoles started to push the ball the other way. After a few quick passes FSU was able to get the ball to talented Deyna Castellanos up the right side of the field. After getting it to the top of the box, Castellanos slowed down her dribble and picked out her pass. She sent a low bouncing cross to the feet of Dallas Dorosy who slid in front of her defender to beat the diving Tar Heel goalie giving the ‘Noles the lead.
FSU was able to deny North Carolina the tying goal after a furious comeback attempt giving Florida State the 1-0 victory for the national championship. On Tuesday the champions returned to a hero’s welcome in the champions club to celebrate with the home fans.
FSU gained the number one seed by knocking off Duke, Virginia and eventual national runner-up North Carolina. During the NCAA tournament run to the College Cup, the Seminoles defeated Loyola Chicago, South Florida, Southern California and Penn State.
Football
Offenses coordinator Walt Bell has taken the head-coaching job at the University of Massachusetts. Former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze, North Carolina coach Larry Fedora and Houston offensive coordinator Kendal Briles are among the candidates to replace him.
First team all ACC defensive end Brian Burns has declared for the NFL draft. Many draft analysts project him to go in the first round.
Junior linebacker Adonis Thomas has decided to transfer.

Basketball
Men’s basketball struggled with turning the ball over for the first 30 minutes of the game, but used a couple late runs to claim the 83-67 win over the Troy Trojans to improve to 7-1.
PJ Savoy hit 4 shots from beyond the arc in his 16 point performance. Mfiondu Kabengele had another big night with 10 pts, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Next up is UConn in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday at 6:30 PM on ESPN2. This will be another early-season test for the Seminoles as the Huskies are 6-2 on the season. News broke last night that forward Phil Cofer was participating in practice and will be in uniform Saturday night. There is still no official word on whether or not he will play.
Women’s basketball played Mercer on Wednesday and eeked out a 57-56 victory. Next up is a road trip to New York City to take on the new St. John’s Red Storm.

Basketball
FAMU men’s basketball lost three road games in the last week to North Florida, South Alabama and DePaul. The Rattlers did secure a victory last night on their home court versus Fort Valley State. Next up is a trip to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech on Sunday.
The lady Rattlers claimed their first victory against Edward Waters on Saturday. They will take on Florida this Sunday.
Local high school football
The Madison County Cowboys are the 1A State Champs. Last week in Madison County they defeated Hawthorne 24-0 to earn a trip to Orlando. Yesterday they defeated the Baker Gators 48-6 to claim the title.
Port St. Joe lost to Baker in the state semis last weekend.
North Florida Christian defeated Victory Christian last Friday to advance to the 2A state title game. They will play Champagnat Catholic this Friday at 10 AM in Orlando.
Florida High was defeated in the state semis 49-48 last Friday.
