Chiles defeated Maclay in a dual swim meet Wednesday evening, Sept. 16, at the Maclay School pool, earning a 1,204-951 combined victory. Chiles won both the girls and boys competitions, taking the girls meet 607-465 and the boys meet 597-486.
Maclay recorded four event victories, including three individual wins and one relay victory, while several of its swimmers also recorded significant improvements from their seed times.
Chiles was led by a strong group of individual winners. McKay Yearty won both the girls 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.01 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.18, while Amelia McGlynn took the 50-yard freestyle in 25.09 and 100-yard freestyle in 57.26. Yiyan Wu also earned victories in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.47) and was part of Chiles’ winning 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
Chiles’ boys were similarly strong, with Owen Ekk winning the 200-yard individual medley in 1:50.17 and the 100-yard freestyle in 46.16. Kipton Fenniman won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.39 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.32, while Dalton Von Hertsenberg won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.61. Tyler Wang added wins in the 100-yard butterfly (52.84) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.58).
Chiles also swept several events. In the boys 100-yard butterfly, Wang, Emmanuel Squitier and Andrew Costan finished first through third, while Fenniman, Von Hertsenberg and Solomon Osborne swept the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle. The Chiles boys also won all three relays, including the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:30.30 and the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:15.96.
Maclay’s strongest individual performances came from Eliza Horton, Olivia Holt and William Chen. Horton won both the girls 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.95 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:17.41. Holt won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.82, while Chen captured the boys 50-yard freestyle in 21.67.
Maclay also had several swimmers finish near the top of their events. David Paquette placed second in the boys 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.82 and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:07.48, while Brennan Abatecola finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. Molly Lambert added third-place finishes in both the girls 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle.
Other notable Maclay performances came from Emmie Sutton, who finished second in the girls 100-yard backstroke, and Lila Bubriski, who placed third in the same event. Katherine Johnson finished second behind Horton in the 200-yard individual medley and was third in the 100-yard butterfly. The Maclay girls also earned the meet’s first event victory by winning the 200-yard medley relay in 2:02.51 behind Sutton, Horton, Holt and Lambert.
Several Maclay swimmers were also recognized for significant time improvements. Savva Istomin dropped time in the 100-yard butterfly, while Kaylee Hanselman and Audra Bubriski improved in the 100-yard freestyle. Lydian Allen improved her 50-yard freestyle time, and Ryan Randell made a notable improvement in the 200-yard individual medley. Horton was also highlighted for her improvement in the 200-yard individual medley.
Despite the final team score, Maclay’s coaching staff noted that the swimmers remained consistently competitive throughout the individual and relay events. Chiles’ depth provided an advantage in the overall scoring, while Maclay continued to produce strong individual finishes and several significant time drops.
Chiles ultimately won both sides of the dual meet, but the evening provided strong performances across both teams as the swimmers continue through the regular season.
