US Attorney “Takes No Position” on City Audit of Contracts

At the September 11, 2019 Tallahassee City Commission meeting, elected officials directed City Auditor to develop a process and methodology for an audit of contracts between the City and certain vendors based on the statement of facts resulting from the federal investigation.

Former City Commissioner Scott Maddox recently plead guilty to federal charges that included taking money for favorable votes on city contracts.

In early August, City of Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey called for an audit of “city actions & contracts” related to the federal investigation. Dailey’s announcement came two days after similar statements from City Commissioner Jeremy Matlow.

In response to an inquiry from City Attorney Cassandra Jackson related to the City of Tallahassee auditing certain contracts, U.S. Attorney Lawrence Keefe stated in a letter written on August 26, 2019 that, “the Justice Department takes no position regarding the acts of a separate sovereign, the City of Tallahassee. The City is free to take whatever action it deems necessary and appropriate.”

City Attorney Jackson recommended that “any review of the process for the approval of contracts or other City processes occur after there is reasonable certainty that the federal investigation related to these matters is complete.”

Ms. Jackson stated, that in her opinion, “this could be as soon as the sentencing of Mr. Maddox.”

  1. Some of the contracts began during the Marks/Favors era and should be investigated. I think the blueprint for corruption may have begun with them.

  2. The mayor is making car commercials (mis)using his position as mayor and Commissioner Matlow is not a shameless self-promoter, but doing what he took an oath to do.

    1. Yeah Matlow your shine is now! Folks are looking for an ethical and prudent leader whether D or R. For the cause grab this bull by the horn and expose, rescission contracts, then blacklist. No need to wait, timing is everything!

      1. So true.
Amazing how Matlow (a Democrat) has shown more common sense leadership in his short time in office than that fat good old boy (also a Democrat) that the local idiot voters elected as Mayor!!!!!
I’m beginning to think Marlow is a clever planted agent of The FBI that our same local idiot voters were tricked into electing. Get ’em Matlow!!!!!

  3. “After there is reasonable certainty that the federal investigation related to these matters is complete” ? WHY WAIT, you could find something that the Feds could USE. Not only against Scott but possibly others.

  4. Does anyone doubt that a lot of usual suspects were praying to their non-God that the US ATTY. would have issued a hands off no audit statement?
Dont get all happy the leftist powers that be will still slow roll any actual audit to the point of just some busy work that will actually find nothing.
Here’s the real take away that the genteel reader needs to shove in an ear and rattle around in the liberal addled brain:
We would not be here had Jeremy Matlow insisted on doing the right thing of calling for the audits.
This recently elected “Democrat” Jeremy Matlow has become an annoyance to the rank and file liberal usual suspects. Jeremy is not looking the other way and may harbor in his heart the much feared silver bullet known as “honesty”. Our usual suspects fear honesty more than a vampire fears the cross and the garlic necklace.
The usual suspects worst fear is upon them:
Jeremy Matlow is a conservative in leftist clothing.
