Leon County Commissioner Rick Minor Appears on Above the Fold

On November 7th, Tallahassee Reports editor Steve Stewart interviewed Leon County Commissioner Rick Minor on Real Talk 93.3’s Above the Fold. Stewart and Minor discussed current issues that included the Blueprint Northeast Gateway Project and the Children’s Services Council.

After serving as a Leon County Commissioner for about a year, Minor gave his initial impressions of the job.

“I used to work with the Mayor and the City Commissioners, so I don’t really have that many surprises on the County Commission, the work is very similar,” he said. “One thing that’s different though, that surprised me, is the breadth of the issues that we deal with.”

Minor first gave his thoughts on the Northeast Gateway project, which has received significant push-back from the community. He said the next step in the project is analyzing the results of the traffic study, which will be presented at a December meeting.

“Nothing is a done deal,” he said. “I will tell you, in my year on the County Commission, I don’t think there’s been any issue that has received more enthusiastic opinions one way or on one side than any other issue.”

He continued, “We need to listen to what our citizens want and work really hard, do everything we possibly can, to accommodate those requests.”

Stewart and Minor then discussed the proposed Children’s Services Council (CSC). At the upcoming Planning Committee on November 8th, a draft report will list recommendations for the CSC. If approved by voters, the CSC could increase property tax rates, making accountability essential.

Minor emphasized that, if the CSC is established, measurable benchmarks will be important to accountability. He noted that other Florida counties have been successful in measuring their progress through metrics and showing improvement over time.

“I want to make sure we’re held accountable for the use of any CSC money,” he said. “I want to make sure that the money spent is actually going to make a real difference for our kids.”

On Above the Fold, Stewart and Minor also discussed the new County Attorney, the controversy surrounding Hustle Hollywood on North Monroe, and the Third Act Program that Minor has been working on.

Above the Fold runs on Real Talk 93.3 FM on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. until noon.

    1. Imagine, I want to start a business so I go to the city for a loan because my business will benefit the public. The city asks for my business plan and assurances I can repay the loan. I tell them I don’t have either, but will provide the documents they need after they give me the loan. Should the city loan me your money?

  1. The planning committee’s report has NO metrics or accountability measurement plans in it. Supposedly those will be developed AFTER the tax passes. I don’t believe that.

  2. “He noted that other Florida counties have been successful in measuring their progress through metrics and showing improvement over time.” …………………. There are ALSO several Counties that WISHED they never did this. Talk to THEM as well.

  3. ““I want to make sure we’re held accountable for the use of any CSC money,” he said. “I want to make sure that the money spent is actually going to make a real difference for our kids.”” …………. Then you better read every word of what this is all about and HOW it is going to work. You should also talk to Commissioner Desloge about his thoughts on this as well. I have the article some where that he Revealed all that is WRONG with this and I plan to Vote NO on it.

  4. TR, this was a great show. Please make it easily available to the public to replay. I have always had my doubts about Rick Minor his having worked with John Marks, but for some reason I feel a tiny bit better about him. God help us.
