The Tallahassee Reports Daily Briefs: Wednesday, March 29

LOCAL NEWS

Just a day after City Walk Urban Mission Shelter residents were told they couldn’t be housed overnight, the organization learned that the order will be paused, at least until a court date in April. The shelter was cited for a fire code violation in November when TFD discovered the building does not have a working sprinkler system.

On March 27th, the Leon County School Board held their bi-weekly Agenda Review Meeting, which included two workshops. There was no discussion about the agenda that will addressed at the March 28th general business meeting, so staff went straight to the workshop discussions. Get the details.

FLORIDA NEWS

The Florida House’s Health & Human Services Committee voted to advance a bill that would prohibit Minors from receiving “gender-affirming care.” Doctors who ignore this rule would be charged with a third-degree felony. The legislation also would require minors who are already receiving gender-affirming treatments to end their care by the end of the year. The bill also impacts adults seeking to transition. It would ban insurers from covering gender-affirming care for adults and prohibit a person’s biological sex from being changed on a birth certificate.

The Florida Senate’s Fiscal Policy committee advanced a bill that would ban abortion after six weeks. The bill would permit abortion up to 15 weeks if the woman was impregnated by rape or incest or a combination thereof. Similarly, if the fetus had a “fatal abnormality,” abortion would be permitted during the first two trimesters. DeSantis has offered his support for the bill while also saying “exceptions are sensible.”

  1. Pat A.,
The real story on City Walk is that the Fire Marshal instituted a Fire Watch as a viable alternative as they awaited the sprinkler system install. It’s all in writing.

8 people got OSHA Fire Watch certified and did the appropriate rounds and paperwork.

Then, out of the blue, the same Fire Marshall reneged on the agreement on Friday giving them the weekend to stop allowing people to sleep indoors.

Everything was fine… until it wasn’t.

What changed all of a sudden?

Probably the fact a developer wants to put luxury townhouses on the 9 acres located directly across from the Mission. And brought City Walk up in the commission meeting…

  2. So … the legislature is (again) telling doctors what is good for patients and parents what is good for their kids. The first part no longer surprises me but I thought parents always know best.

  3. I believe the Tallahassee Democrat’s reporting on the classical art lesson of Michelangelo’s David was the more accurate reporting. Forgive me for having an opinion.

  4. I don’t rely on the Steve Stewart show for news. Where is the accurate reporting on the “other” issues regarding the teacher? Crickets. They can’t seem to back up that excuse.

Where are the other reasons for the City of Tallahassee’s HR Director’s “other” issues? Crickets.

If they want to be credible then don’t pawn off the art lesson as the reason because it made Tallahassee look bad. When there is good leadership these things don’t happen at all they’re taken care of before they get to this level

I think the “other” reasons are a mixture of misogyny, poor board leadership (also CSC Board) and poor attempts to cover up corruption.

  5. @ N. Weed. Steve addresses the whole fired principal/Michelangelo issue on his radio show Tuesday. The story you heard and the story the Fake News told were not accurate. Apparently, the Principal was on thin ice, got fired and she said, because of the Michelangelo class. Not true.

To call the Tallahassee Democrat Fake News is an understatement. They purposely reported the firing incorrectly.

  6. “The legislation also would require minors who are already receiving gender-affirming treatments to end their care by the end of the year.”

What kind of Side Effects or Damage could it cause when the Treatment is stopped in 8 Months?

  7. Where is the story on the Principal being fired over an art lesson – Michelangelo’s David – boy did that make Tallahassee look like a bunch of Hayseeds. For the record it was NOT pornographic, it was a perfectly acceptable art lesson.

  8. “It would ban insurers from covering gender-affirming care for adults and prohibit a person’s biological sex from being changed on a birth certificate.”

Now this is what I call small government in action! Thank goodness that the state of FREEDOM knows that it is the governments job to tell insurers what should be covered, and not Elitist Physicians. Freedom, Freedom, Freedom!

“The bill would permit abortion up to 15 weeks if the woman was impregnated by rape or incest or a combination thereof.”

Yes, but only if you “provide documentation, such as a court restraining order or police report, to prove they were victimized.”

And again, we can see how much FREEDOM we have in Florida, where the government never tells us how to live our lives.

  9. Reference: City Walk Urban Mission Shelter residents were told they couldn’t be housed overnight.

Government Bureaucracy at its finest. It would be safer for you to sleep outside than at the shelter.

I thought Tuesday’s Steve Stewart Show was really good. Good job shinning a light on the fake news.
